(West Covina, Calif.) – The popular culture image of Johnny Cash is that of a hard-living rebel who defied the Country Music Establishment.  On Saturday, February 8, at 2 p.m., at the West Covina Library, 1601 W. Covina Parkway, Michael J Smith presents his Johnny Cash Music Workshop with his vocalist/bassist Leticia Blumette as June Carter and tells the “rest of the story.”  Smith goes behind the myth and music of the “Man In Black” and presents a musical workshop about the roots of Cash’s music including stories about the Carter Family, Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins. Kris Kristofferson, and Sun Records. Smith talks about how Cash wrote songs describing the plight of Native Americans, prisoners, and the downtrodden, giving a voice to the voiceless.  Included are tunes such as “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Ring of Fire,” and “Walk The Line,” plus Johnny Cash/June Carter duets such as “Jackson.” These library shows usually encompass a wide demographic, ranging from elementary-aged students and their parents to teens and seniors. Smith has toured from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, Ireland to Israel, presenting his award-winning Tribute to Johnny Cash with his band, Mighty Cash Cats. His show covers all six decades of Johnny Cash’s career and includes fun Johnny Cash and June Carter duets.

Interview with Mighty Cash Cats front person Michael J Smith in European publication, Vents Magazine –

“Michael J Smith leads the performance playing a black acoustic guitar. It is impossible not to be drawn to the bass texture of his voice-and his physical and aural resemblance to Johnny Cash is practically eerie.”
MUSIC CONNECTION
