This might not be New Orleans, but you couldn’t tell by the music when The Funky Meters hit the stage of Austin’s own ACL-Live at the Moody Theater on February 9, 2013. Originally formed in 1967 as the Meters, the quintessential funk band now known as The Funky Meters blends the sounds of funk, blues, jazz, and dance into their trademark sound. The band is comprised of founding members Art Neville on keys and George Porter Jr on bass, with New Orleans native Brian Soltz on guitar and Russell Batiste Jr on drums.

The band had their audience on their feet dancing and having a great time all throughout their two-hour set. The Funky Meters opened with “Fire on the Bayou” and performed other classics like “Love Slip Up On Ya,” “Africa,” and covers like “Madri Gras Mambo,” “Go To The Madri Gras,’ and “Carnival Time.”

Seventy-six year old Art Neville might have slowed down a bit, but he is definitely still a funk force to be reckoned with. He had the audience dancing to a funk beat all show long.
