Return To ForeverThe jazz fusion super group Return to Forever IV visited the stage at Austin City Limits Live at the Moody Theater on September 13, 2011. The stop was part of the groups 32 city US tour. The fourth edition of Return to Forever features core members Chick Corea on keys, Stanley Clarke on bass and Lenny White on drums. Joining these three this time around are violin virtuoso Jean-Luc Ponty and guitarist Frank Gambale.

The band is known for their long format free-form jazz songs which allow for featured solos by each incredible musician in the group.  This style was showcased when the band performed a 15 minute rendition of “Romantic Warrior” which featured Ponty on his electric violin. The audience responded with one of several standing ovations for the 90-minute set.

Return To Forever

Opening the night for Return to Forever IV was Zappa Plays Zappa.  This musical tribute to Frank Zappa, led by son Dweezil Zappa, expertly presented many of Frank’s classics. It was evident that Dweezil had spent time studying his dad’s music as the selections were quite remarkable. Dweezil was joined on stage by Scheila Gonzalez on flute, saxophone, keys and vocals, Pete Griffin on bass, Billy Hulting on percussion, Jamie Kime on guitar, Ben Thomas on vocals, Jim Travers on drums and vocals, and Chris Norton on keyboards and vocals.
