A Feast for your Ears, Your Tastebuds and Never a Charge Cover!

By: Denise Ames, Anchor for the So Cal TV Show “Focus in the Mix with Denise Ames”, for All Access Magazine

Free live music every night of the week in L.A.?  You bet ~ at COLOMBO’S ITALIAN RESTAURANT & JAZZ CLUB, located within the community of Eagle Rock!  Colombo’s is featured during “True Hollywood Story: Hollywood Ex-Wives” throughout GRETCHEN BONADUCE’s segments currently airing on E! Channel.  The Reality TV Star also choose the restaurant/club to host her Premiere Party debuting her highly-rated series “Re-Inventing Bonaduce” and frequents the haunt with her family and friends.

(Radio Personalities RICHARD BLADE and KRLA’s MIKE GALLAGHER, Vh1 “Rock of Love 2” winner AMBRE LAKE,  FRANK INFANTE of BLONDIE fame and co-founders of the band THE CURE, LOL TOLHURST and MICHAEL DEMPSEY have all hung out at Colombo’s.

Over the last five decades Colombo’s has become the ‘it’ spot for those who appreciate good food and music. Open daily for breakfast lunch and dinner they offer incredible authentic Italian cuisine, a full bar, private party room, outdoor patio seating and free live music nightly, all in a casual festive atmosphere.  To celebrate All Access Magazine’s first ever Country, Jazz and Blues Issue, Vic Parrino, General Manager (and nephew to Owner Ann Colombo) talked to AAM about the success he has had with those music genres.  Colombo’s never charges a cover to enjoy their nightly spectacular live music line up!

All Access Magazine:  Tell us about your ‘Celebrity Jams’ every MONDAY night.

Vic Parrino:  The evening begins with Eric Ekstrand on piano and vocals including jazz contemporary 60’s style.  Then Leslie Baker and Frank Wilson join him at 8:30pm for the Celebrity Jam session.  Musicians come in, sign up and the music goes til Midnight!  We get quite a few people in here on Mondays; they tend to enjoy light appetizers and pizzas along with full dinners and of course cocktails and wine.  RICHIE RAMONE, former drummer for THE RAMONES recently participating in our Celebrity Jam.  World-renowned sax player JUSTO ALMARIO drops in whenever he’s in town.  BOBBY GARCIA, well known in the jazz community takes part and BILLY MITCHELL, who is very active in the Monterey Jazz Festival, brings his students in to sing and perform.

AAM: What can we expect on TUESDAY evenings?

VP: Tom Armbruster performs Jazz-flavored numbers plus 60’s and 70’s Bella-type music that are soft and easy to listen to, great for dinner time.

Writer’s Note: Also on Tuesdays, every bottle of wine in stock is a whopping 50% off all day!

VP: Karen Hernandez, Jimmy Spencer and friends perform.  I call their music more Lounge-oriented because Jimmy’s got this gorgeous deep baritone voice.  They make for great listening while you’re dining.

AAM: A Jazz Quartet takes over Colombo’s on THURSDAYS?

VP: The Rio Fiumara Tom Armbruster Jazz Quartet has been playing at Colombo’s for more than seven years now.  They provide variety including old standards in a traditional Jazz sense.  It is quite interesting with Rio on several different horns and Tom on vocals.  They also feature a bass player along with a drummer.

VP: Friday we always start off with Steven Thompson on piano and Sergio on violin through dinnertime.  On Saturdays we begin with Ernie Draffin on piano and vocals during that same time frame.  Then later each evening we added such acts as Jack Minor and the Fat Sleepers to perform Country music at least once a month because there isn’t anybody offering live Country music in Eagle Rock so we thought it would be a nice change of pace and people really like them!  Patsy Meyer sings lead vocals with Eddie Hernandez and Blue Soul who play all over Los Angeles and have quite a following.  They specialize in 50’s, 60’s and 70’s music; we’ve had great response from the crowd so far!  Tony White and his quartet are regularly scheduled Jazz performers on late Saturday nights also as well as the four-piece group Latin Kool.  Both nights the live music keeps going until closing!

AAM: And finally, what goes down at Colombo’s on Sundays?

VP: It’s Jazz night with the Eric Ekstrand Trio; Eric, Leslie, and Frank play all your Jazz favorites.

Colombo’s also takes part in other big events like the massive annual Eagle Rock Music Festival by featuring hot musical acts both inside and outside in their outdoor patio area.  The restaurant/club is conveniently located at 1833 Colorado Boulevard between Eagle Rock and Figueroa Boulevards; reservations are not mandatory but recommended (323) 254-9138.
