The Damnwells :: One Last Century
CD Review
By Meijin Bruttomesso
The Damwells are sounding pretty damn swell. Supported by a long list of musicians, The Damnwells are, at heart, guitarist/songwriter Alex Dezen and bassist Ted Hudson, who settled in Brooklyn after several relocations and band rearrangements. Together, they meld smooth country cadences, wistful acoustic folk guitars, and jam-band nonchalance, all which are complimented by Dezen’s earnest vocals and passionate verses that will put listeners at ease despite heartbreaking lyrical material. Tracks from their latest, “One Last Century,” are romantic but not overdone, relaxing but not soporific, and touching but not tear-jerking. A bittersweet “Bastard of Midnight,” yearning “55 Pictures,” contemplative “Like It Is,” melancholy “Soundtrack,” tuneful “Golden Days,” and up-tempo “I Am a Leaver” demonstrate the delicate balance that The Damnwells have created between balladic and blissful. The Damnwells’ “One Last Century” is available for FREE on their official website, www.thedamnwells.com.
