Fun. at the Mercury Lounge
Live Review
By Meijin Bruttomesso
Live at Mercury Lounge, September 17, 2009, New York’s fun. led fans down the highway to happy at the sold-out Mercury Lounge. Making a home town tour stop, fun. brightened an often melancholy music scene with their joyful charisma and sugary shell. Highlighted tracks from their debut “Aim and Ignite,” and a standout performance, showcasing vocalist Nate Reuss’s unbelievable range and lung capacity, prompted universal sing-a-longs with fun.. On “Benson Hedges” and “Barlights,” gospel harmonies illuminated the halos over fun.’s heads; and twinkling piano lines, peppy trumpets, and operatic vocals united tracks “I Wanna Be the One,” “All the Pretty Girls,” and “The Gambler.” The audience took a jovial jaunt with "Walking the Dog's delicate reggae; and while still musically playful, “At Least I’m Not as Sad as You’s” cheeriness gently teased them. As the merriment wrapped, the theatricality of “Light a Roman Candle with Me,” and the golden Oldies shuffles of encore “Take Your Time (Coming Home)” breathed infectious bounciness. Fun. are not kidding about being fun. www.ournameisfun.com
