Steve Vai :: Where The Wild Things Are

Favored Nations

By The Atomic Chaser

Steve Vai :: Where The Wild Things Are'Where the Wild Things Are ' a two-disc set that is a great expo of Steve Vai and his incredible musical talent. I've watched this DVD a couple of times now and love it. His playing in incredible. The album was recorded and filmed at the State Theatre in Minneapolis, MN as part of Vai’s “Sound Theories” world tour. Steve Vai is joined on stage by Alex DePue (violin), Ann Marie Calhoun (violin), Bryan Beller (bass), Jeremy Colson (drums), Dave Weiner (guitar and sitar) and Zack Wiesinger (lap steel). Vai's stage antics are fun, entertaining and moving you can see he's been influenced by Zappa, DLR and knows how to perform visually. It truly shows off Steve Vai's talent and personality. The DVD itself leaves you in awe. Steve is incredible on his studio recordings but you think: "how is he going to pull this off live"? Well, he does perfectly. It is like watching Michael Jordan in his prime. Musically, he does a tremendous job of weaving very interesting melodies and layers of sound together. The 2 hour and 40 minute set contains several new tracks and re-orchestrated pieces culled from Vai's catalog.Serving up fan favs like, "Now We Run", "Freak Show Excess and one my favs, "All About Eve". He also serves up new material in the form of the mind-blowing tracks, "Paint Me Your Face","Treasure Island", "Taurus Bulba" and "Par Brahm".It is not just fast paying here. There are great dynamics at work in his compositions. The guitar is simply his vehicle for creating music. He's not held back at all by the guitar but effortlessly can make any sound he imagines. Steve's music isn't for everyone. If you have any interest in this type of music with amazing guitar at blazing speed but fully under control you have to see this check this 2 disc set out. if you like it, it might give you a feeling of uforia or make you cry with feeling. It reminds me of being high, it's intoxicating. Some hate it, I love it. I think you will too.
