Lynch Mob :: Smoke And Mirrors

Frontier Records

By The Atomic Chaser

Lynch Mob :: Smoke And MirrorsLynch Mob's debut release, 'Wicked Sensation', in my opinion was one of the most overlooked hard rock records around. The chemistry between Oni Logan's vocals and George Lynch's guitar work were as tight as white on rice. Then Oni and George went their seperate ways and the the magic that was once Lynch Mob was gone. Okay, George tried to keep the ship afloat with many different variations of the band, still nothing compared to their debut. Until now! The rocks gods have heard our prayers, George Lynch and Oni Logan have reunited and have unleashed Lynch Mob's latest release, 'Smoke and Mirrors'. After seventeen long years Oni Logan and George Lynch are back together with what I believe is the best Lynch Mob album since their debut. Joining the line-up are dynamic bassist Marco Mendoza (Ted Nugent, Thin Lizzy) and drummer Scott Coogan (Brides of Destruction, Ace Frehley). Kicking off the CD is “21st Century Man,” with the band formally declaring their triumphant return. Built along a traditional George Lynch rhythmic progression, Oni Logan promptly enters the foray right where he left off from 'Wicked Sensation'. The song is ripe with melody and features a catchy vocal hook. George proves that he can lie back within a song and let it breath as the band builds it into a melodramatic production. That is evident on the title track “Smoke and Mirrors.” Guitar layers, whether semi-acoustic electric or full-on distorted overtones. “Lucky Man” latches on to another big chorus, melodic solo. It’s definitely an all Oni Logan and George Lynch style of number. 'Smoke and Mirrors' purposely was written with the same style and fluidity as Lynch Mob’s debut CD. Obviously, Oni Logan and George Lynch have matured over the years. Each has been involved in various music projects. So fans can expect subtle changes in the musicians’ performances, but, for the most part Lynch Mob are able to harness the bluesy, hard rock swagger of their classic debut release. Welcome back boys!
