Blackened Skies
at UB's, Mesa (AZ):
By David Svendsen
On July 10th at UB’s in Mesa (AZ) I got bitchslapped by a brutal set from a band called Blackened Skies. Never heard them before, and was pleasantly surprised. Searing vocals, hammering guitars and pummeling drums – what else could you want on a rowdy Friday night?
The band launched in to Auto Da Fe, Ascend Me Beloved and Sacrifice to Survive, all clearly demonstrating professional playing and craftsmanship. Guitarists Chase Hansel and Moses Lucero clearly sharpen their riffs in to razor sharp weapons aimed squarely at the crowd. Pummeling is handled jointly by bassist John Brady and drummer Nathan Bigelow. Surfing this wave of destruction is vocalist Chad Martens.

The first highlight of the night was when the band introduced 17 year old Jordan Breckon, an up and coming metal guitarist in his own right. Jordan flawlessly riffed alongside Chase during a blistering performance of Retaliation, his first live performance. No shit? Really? The kid acted
and played like a seasoned vet.
The second highlight of the night had Finnish metal god Antony Hamalainen from Nightrage jump onstage for the band’s cover of Nightrage’s Omen. While Antony handled vocal duties and got the pit raging, Jordan, Chase and Moses handled riff duties with ease. If you walked in to this set not hearing Jordan’s introduction, you could have easily believed this band had three guitarists. First live show – and he’s playing with Finnish royalty? This kid is going to be someone to keep your death metal eye on.
The band – sans Jordan and Antony – finished the night with Purpose Lost. Next chance you have to catch this band, do it. Not only will the band make it worthwhile, but you never know who will show up to jam.
