Dan Garner - Dan Garner IV
CD Review
By Kim Thore
According to Dan Garner’s official bio he “has been described as a singer/songwriter who paints a diverse sonic and lyrical landscape, showcasing a broad diversity of musical influences. Dan was an apprentice for thirteen years to the late legendary pre-war bluesman, JesseThomas, recording and performing with him until Thomas’ death in 1995. Through various labels, Garner has produced eleven releases, which span the genres of acoustic blues, rockabilly and gospel and this year Garner released "Dan Garner IV".
It is easy to hear the various influences that Garner has come in to and there are definitely some bookmark tunes on his latest release. Garner is at his best though when delving into that singer/songwriter blues niche instead of delivering all over the map. The result is that Dan Garner IV showcases some real talent but the listener has to shuffle through some tunes that while passable seem to feel “unlike” the singer. With a watered down Petty-esque voice that is rather enticing and notable guitar work, Garner is best showcased in the soulful mourn instead of the “camp”.
While “Dan Garner IV” may be inconsistent, it does show promise… made good if the focus stays on the roots and not the branches.
