Paul Gilbert & Freddie Nelson :: United States

Mascot Records/R.E.D. Distribution

By The Atomic Chaser

Paul Gilbert & Freddie Nelson'UNITED STATES' marks the first collaboration between Mr. Big/RACER X s Paul Gilbert and Freddie Nelson. Musically, the album is a lot of fun to listen to. The songs and arrangements are very well crafted: energetic, creative, contain a lot of stylistic variety, and are quite memorable. What if Queen and Mr. Big decided to do a rock record? This one is what it would sound like. Ten tracks total all are amazing, not a weak track in the bunch. The chemistry of Gilbert and Nelson are like white on rice as evident on tracks like, the stone cold arena rockers,"The Last Rock and Roll Star", "Bad Times Good" and "Hideaway". Then there are movers like,"Paris Hilton Look-Alike", "The Answer" and "Pulsar" that are guaranteed to stimulate your rock and roll "G-spot". Overall 'United States' shows how well written songs, combined with rock solid vocals and instrumental brilliance can be united in a spontaneous display of audio-orgasmic proportions, I kid you not. This is truly a great album from start to finish. Almost every song on this album has been one of those song-of-the-moment songs.

I was most curious to hear what Freddie Nelson's vocals sounded like. The buzz that I had heard was that he sounded like Freddie Mercury. On first listen of Nelson's rock solid vocals, I could hear where listeners may be reminded of Freddie Mercury or even Butch Walker. I know, a tall comparison. But I can say without any hesitation and hearing it for myself, Freddie Nelson is the real deal. A singer, performer, and writer with a unique sound whose amazing talents are truly all his own. As for Paul Gilbert, he has brought his outstanding musicianship to render taste and depth to good old' rock and roll and melodic rock music. The result is a type of musicality that only a musician of his caliber can create. I thank the rock gods above for this union of two very talented artist. Thank you Paul for getting it right once again. In Gilbert & Nelson WE TRUST!
