Chris Merritt :: Pixie and the Bear
CD Review
By Kim Thore
Chris Merritt’s “Pixie and the Bear” double cd has a solid trippy rock vibe and is nothing if not a brave undertaking in a world of the typical 10-12 song cd with radio capable snapshots.
As a showcase for Merritt’s unique writing style and well crafted keyboard and piano skills, “Pixie and the Bear” scores high marks. Merritt has the musical depth to be able to produce 22 tracks that are solid and worth the time to invest in each one. Perhaps Merritt’s early songwriting at the tender age of 7 gave him an advantage…whatever the reason, Merritt is accomplished and able to effectively turn a phrase and then turn it back again, keeping the listener tuned in with anticipation.
Backed by Tim Fellow on drums and Dustin Hofheins on bass, rounds out the musical extravaganza that is “Pixie and the Bear”.
If you’re a fan of Ben Folds Five or Bill Joel you’ll find comfort in “Pixie and the Bear”, and raise your lighter to the return of keys in music-- if not you may find it a bit laborious but hard pressed not to still give it a listen and a pat on the back for trying what few would attempt.
