Nineteen 5 :: Beg to Differ
CD review
By Noele Shannon
Nin' teen fiv' [also "19-5"]
1. An anomalous coordinate linking hyper dimensional tetrahedral geometry to the face on mars, the pyramids, and structures on the moon.
2. A rock band with a chick singer that will stomp your ass.
Touching on feelings of losing someone and then reconnecting with them later on in life the harmonious and heartfelt track "Abandon" makes a worthy opening statement on the 2nd CD released by Seattle based alternative rock band Nineteen 5.
This CD spent 2 years in the making and is an impressive follow up to Nineteen 5's Debut "Blind Eye Gone." With a hearty 16 tracks to sink your teeth into, the light side of the disc is appropriately titled "Dawn" with the heavier side being labeled "Dusk."
Notable favorites from the "Dawn" side include "Disguise", a warm, gritty and flowing track that glazes over 'the possibility of death', "Sideways" which seems to exude the flavor of being lost and uncertain of what is next in a personal relationship and "Nothing Ordinary" which sings of losing someone dear to you.
Nestling into the "Dusk" side "Fourteen Motors" packs a punch with upbeat solid drumming accompanied by heavy vocals and fancy finger work on the guitar tracks. "Superband" is crunchy with lead vocals reminiscent of that unmistakable 'Alice in Chains' flavor, what does it touch on? You decide... while "Radio" relates to how we all lose ourselves behind the music and in essence it sets us free.
All in all, a disc chock full of solid musicianship, thought provoking lyrics and beats that ebb and flow much like the tide... Why not pick up your copy at CD Baby cdbaby.com/cd/nineteen52 and add another jewel to your treasure chest... www.myspace.com/nineteen5
