Nickelback :: Darkhorse

Roadrunner Records

By The Atomic Chaser

Nickelback :: DarkhorseNickelback returns with their six studio release in the form of,' Dark Horse', is another strong effort, in fact very little has changed in truth from their 2005's 'All The Right Reasons'. The band brought in legendary producer Mutt Lange to produce the record with Nickelback and longtime collaborator Joey Moi. I was quite curious on how the chemistry between Mutt Lange and the boys would sound. I have to say their chemistry works dead on. From start to finish this album is rock solid. From the sexually enticing rocker, "Something In Your Mouth" to the bravado of "Burn It To The Ground", Chad and the boys stay true their rock roots. One in particular tune, "S.E.X", is a rock and roll aphrodisiac, "I'm loving what you wear… wondering what you have under there... wondering if I'll ever have it under my tongue." I know I got stimulated. In the power ballad department the boys come through as well with their signature formula, the best of which on this record is "Never Gonna Be Alone." Interestingly, lead single on this album "Gotta Be Somebody" isn't the strongest song on this album and is a strange choice for first single, "If Today Was Your Last Today" is a better ballad, and was rather surprisingly pulled as the first single. Hmm, go figure. Today's Nickelback doesn't sound like yesterday's Nickelback so much. Sure, their previous outings, showcased a harder edge, whereas today's Nickelback does seem to flirt more with a mainstream sound. That isn't necessarily a bad thing. I think the great danger it poses to Nickelback is that it may develop a bit of predictability. Oh well, the band sounds great and as a fan that is all that matters. I think anyone who likes Nickelbacks older stuff will get their rocks off with 'Dark Horse' and appreciate its variety. Nickleback has been around for a long and they don't seem to lack any luster. Albums such as this one will secure their longevity on the charts and in the hearts of fans. Nickelback have delivered the goods once more.
