Vive Le Rock ‘n Roll: Nick Dixon at Les Deux

Review

By Meijin Bruttomesso

Nick DixonAn evening of pure, good-time rock ‘n roll, featuring Los Angeles’ Nick Dixon, The Vacation, and Pittsburgh’s The Takeover UK, descended on the Hollywood nightclub Les Deux on November 17, 2008. While a continuous feed of top-notch rock riffs emanated from the Les Deux stage all night, Nick Dixon took the spotlight with their relentlessly powerful stage presence, joie de vivre, and rock-solid sound.

Returning recently to playing live shows from months of writing and recording, Nick Dixon unveiled new tracks from their upcoming Ticonderoga EP along with fan favorites. “Redcoat’s” unyielding back beat set the pace for a get-up-and-go set that brought listeners streaming into the intimate Les Deux space. A fresh tune “Ticonderoga” maintained Nick Dixon’s fast-paced bravado and inviting nature, demonstrating that their time in the studio had produced alluring music and even tighter solidarity. Introduced as a 'little disco tune,' “Love City Bar’s” infectious drive created by Rob Tonsick’s (vocals/guitar) smooth, effortlessly soulful vocals and Jake Drake’s (bass/backing vocals) funky bass lines kept the crowd captivated and jumping with Raj Pillai’s (guitar/backing vocals) jazzy chords and lively demeanor. The frantic “Hello” and swinging “In the Hotel” highlighted Tonsick’s ardent Nick Dixonexpressiveness and the entire band’s compelling charisma that sent audience members grabbing for the gratis copies of Nick Dixon’s unofficially released EP. The quartet's newly crafted “Forever Isn’t Enough" and rousing cover of “Yer Blues” showcased their instant hooks and featured fiery guitar solos that meshed seamlessly with Paxton Pryor’s (drums/backing vocals) spot-on percussion. Closing with the adrenaline-pumping “Drug Store Queen,” Nick Dixon upheld their self-proclaimed status as a “straight ahead, no-nonsense rock band,” and proved that rock ‘n roll is still alive and well in this band's hands.

Nick Dixon’s Les Deux debut of 'neo-rock' material promises an exceptional album and stirs up eager anticipation for their future live performances.
