KingBaby :: Find My Way
CD Review
By Kim Thore
Delta Blues. Southern Rock. No, make that swampy, stick to you rock. Such is the latest offering from California’s own KingBaby. Their latest cd “Find My Way” is the follow up to their debut “Whole Lotta Easy” from 2005 and at first listen the years have been kind in between to this commanding trio.
Made up of Lance Bulen on vocals and guitar, Alex Irwin on drums and Allan Hearn on bass, KingBaby has a fuller sound than most three pieces- this could be because separately each musician, is just that a musician and not simply a player. They have each honed their chops with other bands, other stages, other recordings, but have found in this combo all the right ingredients. With perhaps tighter production being the only blemish, for ex. Bulen’s vocals get a bit lost in the mix at times- the songs are catchy ear candy.
Overall “Find My Way” is a lighthearted and somewhat jocular collection - some of the lyrics may be heavy but the composition and music is fm radio friendly and Itune ready. The recipe doesn’t call for overtly complicated arrangements and structure, so the taste you walk away with is palatable without being complicated cuisine that is unrecognizable.
It is what it is. Good, solid, rock with a little voodoo mischief thrown in for flavor.
