Christine Wayne of Nineteen 5
Interview
By Noele Shannon

Most people think of Seattle and instantly bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Sound Garden come to mind, I hear Seattle and instantly think of Nineteen 5. One of my favorite bands without a doubt is this female fronted act. I’ve followed the career of Vocalist Christine for many, many years and was delighted when the formation of N5 was rounded out by her addition. Having had watched them grow musically over the years I got a sneak listen to their new CD and wanted to introduce the band to YOU the readers.
AAM: Tell us how the band came together and what's the story behind your band name?
CW: Kevin and the band were looking for a vocalist and at the time and I had auditioned. It was a good fit. Stylistically they were looking for a person that vocally could pull of ranges, inflections and intonations of melody, harmony to gut grinding screams. Yep, that was me, ha-ha. All the members in the band are Sci-Fi fans. On the name, Nineteen 5 refers to 19.5 degrees. This mystical Sci-Fi coordinate seems to pop up in places of significance on our planet, or other planets/points in the universe. The "Face on Mars" & Martian pyramids are found at 19.5- degrees. Our own universe also rotates on an axis of 19.5 degrees.
AAM: What's it like being the only girl in the band?
CW: Great ha-ha I have the most estrogen of all! LOL
AAM: Beg to Differ is the name of your 2nd and NEWEST CD, (Blind Eye Gone being your Debut) can you tell us why is this the title and what will be your first single?
CW: Beg to Differ is a play on words of the 1st CD. When you break down the first letters of each word in the title it comes to BEG = Blind eye gone and this is the 2nd CD and differ = different. Also 'Like- We BEG to Differ with???' Voila! Did I confuse you? The first single is "Abandon" which is about people losing someone or something in their life they might not see again. Yet, life has this full circle effect that seems to draw situations back into people's lives magnetically.
AAM: What does N5 hope to accomplish with this release? You seem to have a lot of tracks, why so many?
CW: Well the band would like to share our music with present and future fans as we continue our musical evolution. I know the band would love to have our music on movie & video game soundtracks. The idea was to go ahead and create a feel of a two song disc, eight songs each side (total 16). The Dawn side has songs that are more melodically moving and the Dusk side has our heavier crunchy material a little more reminiscent our first CD. This CD tells a story of all the challenges and emotions, positive or negative that life puts people through.
AAM: Who are your musical influences?
CW: My influence varies greatly. Let's see The Runaways, Anne, and Nancy Wilson to Janis to Stevie Nicks, the band X, Chris Cornell, Souixie Sioux, Gwen Stefani, Madonna, The Cult, and Nick Drake, The Church. The list goes on…
AAM: How do you describe your music to people?
CW: I'd say rock with an alternative twist ;). Some people say wow, the CD has quite a bit of diversity to it, almost multi-genre but not quite. I LOVE the fact that this band takes on musical challenges with open arms and we run with it.
AAM: What image do you think your music conveys?
CW: I think & feel it's about having fun and rocking' out and about being creative on ones owns terms.
AAM: How would you define the word "success"?
CW: Being content as a group and feeling we have met that challenge of being a little different, no matter what other people say telling the band "they need to be a certain way or look a certain way" N5 is happy with the fact that the fans like the sound and take that experience with them.
AAM: You recorded at London Bridge, that place has a lot of history, how was that experience?
CW: Wow what an excellent experience at LBS. Geoff Ott, our producer (he produced both discs) and Jonathan Plum are the owners (BTW -They Rock!) and they are very accommodating to their clientele. LBS has a great vibe, very warm and it is great to see and read the history on the walls literally. The band and I are incredibly grateful to have had this experience recording there.
AAM: Any final words you'd like to share with our readers?
CW: In a time of change, let's rock the world together!
