ManRaze :: Surreal
VH1 Classics
By The Atomic Chaser
2008 debut release, 'Surreal' from this rock trio featuring Phil Collen (Def Leppard), Paul Cook (Sex Pistols) and Simon Laffey (Girl). The band combine Def Leppard style rock with a punk edge. While the band's sound has the punk flavor to it, make no mistake, this trio is all about the rock. For the most part, 'Surreal' is a good, straight rock album. Tracks like "This Is", "Turn It Up", "Can't Find My Own Way" and "Connected To You" follow the patterns laid down by various hard rock and sleaze bands, coming and going in a few minutes apiece and leaving a fresh, spicy taste after they've left. There's melody aplenty and riffage without too many solos getting in the way. This is rock for rockers, with Phil Collen's voice having no problems with the songs, although he does sound rather like Joe Elliot with a cold. That being said, there are a few interesting speed bumps where a bit of ska-lite creeps in, noticeably on "Runnin' Me Up", and even some late Seventies punk ethos on "It's Entertainment". If you are a casual fan of Phil Collen from Def Leppard and want to hear what a band would be like with him fronting, then check this album out. Phil Collen has a history with Def Leppard and is now creating a new sound and a new chapter of music with help from his friends, Paul and Simon. All in all there is a little something for everyone on this album. Just like the artist they are named after, Man Raze have created their own unique sound. Good work gentlemen!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
