Modern Day Romeos

Navy Pier – Chicago, Illinois

Review and Photos by Jim Obos

Modern Day RomeosSo I made a decision to beat the unpredictable weather in the northwest suburbs of Chicago and surprised the band as they started to play on Navy Pier for fans enjoying the July 4th festivities that were about to happen. While the threat of storms loomed all day, and to the north people were getting flooded out, the clouds looked ominous and I braved the drive downtown. When I walked up to the stage and began to witness much of what I have seen every other time I shot these guys, it still amazed me as it again happened … and you ask what happened? The energy produced, not by the storms to the north and not by the lake off Navy Pier, by the band on stage. And yes I have to say the waves created off the pier had to be from these guys playing.

So shooting the band, taking photos and watching the reaction of the fans was part of what these guys are all about. The first few songs, starting out with Rocky Mountain Way, the fans, maybe new to MDR, were still sitting in that awkward Modern Day Romeostime of the night where they all are thinking “I wonder who is going to get up and dance?” Within seconds Jim Wojdyla, lead singer and former karaoke host, (wait for the interview) brought people on the dance floor with his uncanny super powers – much like an X-Men with some sort of mind control mechanism… and with that the dance floor was filling up nicely…

Jump back a few weeks at Bowlapalooza, the band which includes not only Jim on vocals, but also Steve Gill on electric guitar and vocals, Justin Wojdyla (Jim’s brother) on guitar, vocals, cowbell, human synth and other amazing sounds, Chris Perfect on bass and vocals, (yes he is Perfect) and Mike Zaitz on drums brought a seemingly empty space, void of all DNA, to life within, again, seconds. I thought to myself, where is the party? Because it wasn’t at the corner of route 47 and Algonquin Road in Huntley, Illinois…

And then… back to the point of why I am telling everyone this; Modern Day Romeos hits the stage, no Modern Day Romeosmatter where that stage is and rocks the crowd into a frenzy. With covers ranging from Black Betty, Honky Tonk Woman, Centerfold, Santeria and Dancing with Myself / Sedated medley the party gets kicking. And throughout the show, from that first moment, through everyone doing the “Chicken Dance” through the high fives all around –and just because; if you are at an MDR show and even if you come alone, you will make friends during the performance, Jim and the band will make sure of that… you will be pumped up, energized and wanting more by the end of the show… put these guys on your list of shows to see and no matter if it is during the summer or later before sooner during the fall winter indoor season.
