Mass Extinction

EP - “Creation’s Undoing”

By Kim Thore

Mass Extinction

Proving that more comes out of Ireland than Tweed and Gaelic Football is Mass Extinction, an old school thrash metal quintet, that is garnering steady appeal in the UK. Formed in 2003, Mass Extinction has increasingly risen in notoriety through their demos and on stage appeal with gigs ranging from the Ways of Darkness festival in Germany to headlining Ireland’s Whiplash festival in 2007.

Their current EP “Creation’s Undoing” features three tracks with a bonus cut of their impressive cover of Vio-lence’s “Kill on Command” which is also featured on the Irish Tribute to Thrash Compilation “Thrash and Burn”.

Mass ExtinctionComprised of Tom Cunningham on vocals, Adam Shortt and Brian Brennan- guitars, Simon Caffrey-bass and Sam Lambert- drums-Mass Extinction execute with minimal derailment from the thrash genre. If you’re looking for fast and rapid tempos, “shred to pieces” guitar riffs, and aggressive vocals you’ve come to the right place. Another notable is Sam Lambert’s drum work as he plays fast and hard simultaneously, especially in “Kill on Command” and “Global Assassin” where he breaks a sound barrier or two and rigorously performs 2/4’s throughout.

All in all “Creations Undoing’ is a solid EP from a band that is breaking ground on their sound and fury- From an anticipation perspective it will be interesting to see where the band goes when they explore the mires of a full length cd.
