Malea McGuinness :: True Believer
CD Review
By Kim Thore
Combining a 70’s pop sound with a Carole King meets Sarah McLaughlin sensibility is the latest release from Malea McGuinness entitled “True Believer”. Drawing on her own experiences McGuinness has penned a collection of 14 thoughtful tracks that showcase her notable vocal range and the dexterous production of Scott Hackwith (Iggy Pop, The Ramones).
Based in L.A., she has built a solid fan base for her unique brand of ballads and while her training includes stints on Broadway, film and t.v. her cd transcends the usual cabaret fare and gives the listener tried and true depth, and an intensity one might expect from someone who honed her chops at the celebrated Manhattan School of Music.
Stand out tracks like “Dreamer”, “Brave In Your Arms” and “True Believer” showcase McGuinness’s ability to stir up a nostalgic folk sound with a new twist. She pays homage to the glory days of 70’s Lite Radio without delving so deep that it feels like a rerun.
Overall, “True Believer” is an accomplished cd from a proficient artist, providing comfort food for the hungry at heart.
