Cockpit :: EP Mission to Rock
CD Review
By Kim Thore
If you want an appetizer that includes tapas of heavy hooks, guitar shreds, and arena style vocals and never mind the bullock’s bravado look no further than L.A’s own Cockpit. Their 3 track EP precursor to the full length EP Mission to Rock is a “thank you that someone is doing this” return to the heavy stadium rock and metal that should have headbangers worldwide in head bobbing synchronicity. Should we mention the band is the US’s answer to a developing Girlschool? Perhaps , only as in metal chicks are too far and few between and it’s a nice respite to hear Linda Lou’s potent and commanding vocals demonstrating that she is a more than capable pilot.
So, how do four women form a quadrant of rock that is so spot on so early on? Call it fate or a smile from the Metal Gods above. However, according to the official Cockpit bio, it all happened when tired of the lukewarm din dominating Hollywood's music scene and longing for the days of unfeigned, genuine rock when Harley-Davidsons roared down Sunset and smoking was permitted both indoors and out, the members of Cockpit came together as 2003 rolled into 2004.
With each following her musical aspirations to Los Angeles from various parts of the United States and the world, the result was that Vocalist/guitarist Linda Lou, Alicia Blü, lead guitarist, Bassist Terrii Kiing and drummer Rachael Rine all hit their respective previous roads and landed on the West Coast.
And what a superb flight plan it was. “At a Loose End”, “White Flag “and “Gun For Hire” are first-class hits with aggressive, no holds barred take offs and super smooth landings.
If these tracks are any indication of the breadth of Mission to Rock, prepare with your seats in the upright position, you won’t want to miss any of the excitement of this ride.
