Malbec
‘Dawn of Our Age’
By Kim Thore
Malbec n. a grape with a history that stretches back centuries in southwestern France, usually made into an Argentine wine
Malbec n. a five piece indie/rock/pop band from California
The latter is what we’re talking about but interestingly enough the bouquet, and color of this band is good enough to make the most discriminating musical Bacchus happy. Their latest release “Dawn of Our Age” features a stirring collection of psychedelic-esque tracks that recall a more thoughtful Silverchair, a toned down Jet with a dash of Severed Heads-- with lead singer Pablo’s vocals making you wonder what would have happened if Paul Simon had been born a few decades later and given a synthesizer for his first birthday.
Malbec consists of (Pablo - vocals, piano, guitar; Samantha -bass guitar, backing vocals; Nick - guitar, backing vocals; Sidney -keyboards, programming; Mark -drums) formed just five years ago in Los Angeles creating an unique sound that finds comfort in the middle ground of hip-hop beats and modern pop stylings.
Not surprisingly, their sophisticated sound has managed to accrue a steady stream of sync placements in TV shows and movies such as Ghost Whisperer, Flight of the Phoenix, Long Way Round, The Omen, Fox's VIP Passport and One Tree Hill. Not surprisingly, the band was the winner of the LA Music Pipeline Contest (Big FM Europe) competing against 3000 of LA's top bands and made the "Top 100 Best Unsigned Bands" list in Music Connection Magazine for 2005.
In short, “Dawn of Our Age”, is a natural chemical balance achieving an A+ classification as their effect on the palate is extraordinary… a smooth Chablis of stylistic tunes that with their liquidity and flow have a lingering after taste that will have you asking for a refill.
