HAVE your SAY!
“Is 80s Glam-Metal Making a Comeback?”
Our Readers Speak Out
Silver Media Group-Detroit, Lee Runchey: “I don't know that glam-metal is making a comeback exactly as we knew it in the 80s, but a lot of the elements are still there. If you remove the tags and just look at the elements of glam-metal, glam-metal never really died. It just morphed into other things.”
Focus In The Mix TV Show with Denise Ames: YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!
Jaro PhotoMan: “I never wore spandex - not sure if that would be a good thing. As for the music - bring it on again!”
Crazy MX: “I don’t think Glam is making a comeback. It’s more of a revival in the underground scene, because there is no real outlet for young rock bands to make some noise they in turn get opening slots for these old glam bands and bring their new style of Rock n Roll and help pack these venues up. So it might look like there is a buzz but in reality Rock N Roll is alive in the youth of these young bands.”
Freddy: Yes, “Glam metal is coming back big time!!! We can see it in northern Europe it's huge!!! BE the first to jump into it because sh..'s gonna hit the fan!!!”
Jerry Scott: Yes, “I think 80's music is commin back... it should. There's so many depressed 45 plus year olds out there... it would snap em out of it.”
Stu Simone: On one hand, you could say that Glam-Metal is NOT making a comeback… because it never went away! For example Bon Jovi has been selling millions of records, even through the nineties, and their 2007 LP debuted at #1 on the Billboard charts. And BJ, Poison, and Def Leppard have been continuing to have huge tours. On the other hand, one can say that it IS now making a comeback, because the one thing that has been missing since the 80s is NEW original bands making that kind of music with that kind of image, and I’m now starting to see some young new bands come out proudly displaying big hair and makeup, such as Dirty Penny, who played at the All Access Awards show in November. Personally, I hope it DOES come back in a big way, because that means more gigs for my “Hairband Revue” Hair Guitar! And just as important – what would you rather see, someone who threw on a beer-stained T-shirt, or someone who spent half the night making a fashion statement?!
Styll: I think music that has meaning is... songs... stories...
FIFI LARUE: They say if ELVIS PRESLEY was to come back from the "DEAD" he would look like me... I'm Back!
Jerry Scott: Yes, I think 80's music is commin back....it should.. there's so many depressed 45 plus year olds out there… It would snap em out of it!
Heidi Horvath: The 80's are back!! Happy to do it again! Bring on the spandex!
NEARVANA: Dead and Buried, What used to be cool is now really Gay! Take Dirty Penny for example, GAY, GAY, GAY and on top of that old! Like the rest of the Glam Rockers still pushing their walkers around out there! Unfortunately, Tribute Bands are the new "stars", People just want to hear what they know and that’s it, at least in this godforsaken town.
Running Bear: There are some people who weren't really active in the glam scene when it was actually happening, who are now helping the genre to make a "mini-comeback" because they'd like to get a taste of that vintage glory. These are folks who knew about bands such as Motley Crue and Poison in the 80s, but who didn't actually get to the Sunset Strip or the arena shows for the spandex-clad action -- and they're sorry they missed out. So it's good for these latter-day fans to see not only the original bands getting back out there to play their big-hair hits, but also youngster newcomers who are inspired by the same sound and look. And that's why I'd say that glam is making at least a "mini-comeback," yay!
ChriSteele Sex & Patriotism: "LOL, I don't know about the spandex, and I wouldn't really say this sort of movement if its happening is about the clothes! It's about an idea, it's about people wanting a return to music that is FUN and play full. The world is a shitty enough place I don't think people want to be reminded about it in their entertainment constantly anymore. They want an escape. If putting Spandex on, growing your hair out, and rocking out, helps you achieve that, I say "Go for it!"
Scary Perry Productions: About The Come Back of 80's Glam Metal...It has ONLY come back to The Small Clubs. Crap Rapp is still leading the charts since 1985. But Glam Metal hit big from 1987 till 2003. But it still did'nt lead the Rock Industry. I hate to admit that Crap Rapp was on top.
Jeremy Foret: Hell no! That's why its primary descriptor is "80's". Fact of the matter is, more people these days are recognizing that 99% of the new bands coming out are utter garbage. What was once considered hackney and played-out twenty years ago (trust me, I remember) is now being listened to with a somewhat different perspective. Shit, anything sounds good compared to Block party and The Arctic Monkeys. It is my firm belief that my reciprocating meat carver left unattended in the sink with the garbage disposal turned on, recorded over the arrhythmic slamming of my aluminum screen door sounds better than these two bands combined. On a good day. In the studio. But that's off topic...
80's music just sounds better. The quality of musicianship and desire for perfection show through. Musicians in the 80's had to work extremely hard and compete with other, local, REALLY good bands in order to get noticed, not just put up a few hooky videos on myspace and win what amounts to a popularity contest. I guess what I'm trying to say is that music today is in the shitter. People are turning back to what they "remember" as being "good" music. In reality, it's only what was the most commercial... kinda sad really. But what do I know?
Well, that does it for me, thanks for reading!
P.S. - Ironically (hypocritically?) enough, I do have a myspace! www.myspace.com/abruptmusic
Dave Sky: I am a solar concert/heavy metal promoter here in Nor-Cal of Humboldt County (maidenhumboldt.com). It is a small community 4 hours north of San Francisco on the 101, where reggae and world beat festivals ruled the roost for over 25 years. The youth here hate reggae/world beat because it was force fed to them for so long and now every metal concert I present is a near sell out of 800+ at the Mateel (mateel.org). Metal never died. Metal will never die. Metal lives on forever.
Vince: Wow, I just read the Great Article you guys did on US ( Me ) and have to say more than Thank You, it was great :)
Now on a Side Note, besides Singing your Praises when ever we can, always braggin how we Won the AAM 5th Annual Music Award that Makes us More the Proud, Im an Actual Reader, Yes, I confess, I do Read the Magazine!
Well, Im SHOCKED, I just Read Mike Cavanoughs Article, Is He OK? Does he Realize what Happen to Music and the Sell Outs of 91 from both MTV and the Record Labels, as well as the Mass Abandonment of the Club Going Crowd to Just stay home and Be Depressed HA?
I mean Really, having this pass year to really get the vibes of the World and not whatever Radio Station one chooses to listen to. I have to say, the Article might have come off as only Harsh. Except, does he really know, I mean, look at billboard top 100, and listen to the Majority of Radio Stations out there. Let’s not forget the hundreds of Online Radio and Magazines all dedicated to the 80s Metal, NOT as just a Stuck in the 80s mentality, BUT a New Frontier.
I wasn't stuck in the 80s, Nor was a Lot of what was going on here in the east coast, Europe, Sure, they never left, but, we all Moved on. But, about 2 years ago there was a Revolution. ONE started a few years back, but, about 2 years ago, it was becoming more obvious than Not, the 80s were Resurging, Metal was Resurging. It wasn't just those that never got rid of their spandex, their hair, Myspace 40 year olds just catching up on their youth. BUT an Actual Movement, 20 year olds, getting into stuff they are learning to love as their parents did. 30 year olds that were a little to young to live what they saw the older crowd getting to do. And yes, those 40 year olds thinking about HEY, it was Better then, Radio Stations, at least the Majority here and quite a few nationwide, had already caught on to playing Eddie Trunk or Dee Sniders shows. I can’t turn on the radio and NOT hear an 80s band on 5 different Major Stations here that these bands are regrouping to do tours. HEY, I don't know about you, but I know thousands that more than want it, we get asked every single day by more than 22 thousand at the Blue Tiger Myspace, when are you playing Florida, Ohio, Texas, Cali, and every State in between. As Mike would put it, would we be doing this to all be Stuck in the 80s? Or just Not do it, (right now, we can’t, but, what about the Famous ones that can, the LA GUNS, Motley Crue, Poison, I mean Come on )
No, I do see the world walking down the streets, Spandex and Aquanet streaming, But, I have to disagree with his view on these bands touring, (as for Wigs Hats or bandanas, I guess he didn't know the List of Who's, Who's from the 80's that were Men's Clubs, Freight Wigs, Extensions, to a Point where 90% of their hair was fake, and lets skip those that had already had the tummy's and more going too )
Also side note, Meatloaf waits 10 years between each albums, the Rolling Stones have been at it for 40 plus years. The list can be made, show we all use a timer and just say time to move on to the new fashion, in truth, Saints of LA dig? Would he be happier if they did a New Age Emo tune? In truth, I'm not a Bias fan of Crue that is just saying.
Yea Crue Rules, I am saying, I applaud those that can come back after 20 plus years and live it again.
There isn't anything wrong with it. OK the Major Labels haven't got a clue to it yet, and MTV is too stuck on a Disney Mentality to get clues. But the rest of the world is happy saying, these bands are No longer cool. I mean, is he kidding? Are the Beatles No Longer Cool, Is Elvis No Longer Cool?
They were Cool then, and they are Cool Now, :) sorry, he just came off, snobby hehehe. Sometimes you have to appreciate what people do. Does he know the Stones will be soon reaching their 70s, are they no longer cool? I wouldn't want to tell Scorsece that hehehe. He just invested a large amount in the fact that they still are, lets keep it in perspective, :) Besides, it’s all about the Music, isn't it?
Not how Cool you wish to be :)
