Halflit Halo

At The National

Review and photos by Stephen Gibson

Halflit Halo at The NationalThe City of Richmond Virginia may not be well known to a lot of the major record label companies or major bands out on tour which I think is a shame, but I think with a second look Richmond could be a great place to find new and upcoming local bands that want to go out and be major bands.

One such band that I think has the potential of doing that is Halflit Halo, Kevin Hagaman (Lead Vocals), Peyton Dowdy (Guitar), Chris White (Guitar/Vocals), Jeb Bach (Bass/Vocals) and Stuart “Tripp” Coughlan the bands 6 foot 7 drummer deliver some great melodic rock sound and energy. The Vocals of lead singer Kevin Hagaman are very melodic in nature and to me he has a definite presence on the stage as well as a connection with the members of the band and the fans out cheering them on.

Their energy and passion for the live show is definitely unmistakable as the guys bounce around from Halflit Halo at The Nationalspeakers to the drum set to up close in your face during the high points of the show and slow things down during the more serious notes.

Although newly formed since September of 2007, each member brings experience from other local bands and with the addition of Stuart "Tripp" Coughlan in October 2007 things have really kicked off for these guys, when they played on stage at The National (www.thenationalva.com) all 300+ fans in attendance rushed the stage as if they were seeing a major band play, they jammed their fingers and fists in the air and rocked with the band’s sound.

For the band it’s all about entertaining and playing in front of a live audience, according to Peyton, being on stage is one of the best feelings on the planet; all of the band members have played in front of 600 and Halflit Halo at The Nationalalso in front of 6 people and they state that if those 6 people really love their music then it is the same amazing experience.

Although currently they are only doing an EP album there is hopes to release a full length cd in the future title yet to be named but the reviews thus far from the 4 set EP has been outstanding thus far with their debut of Fire Escape from Pergatory.

The bands goal according to Hagaman is to create music their fans can relate to “Being able to insert their own experiences into a song is key.”

Also according to Kevin, their merchandise manager Matt Kirkland has been a lifesaver for them by taking money out of his own pocket to pay for the merchandise that the band is distributing at their shows because he has the faith and the love for the band and is always behind the scenes doing things for the band at all hours of the day and Halflit Halo at The Nationalnight.

The band has rave reviews from Alyssa Holtgrewe with Universal Motown stating “Musically these guys have it together with ferocious moving melodies that remain underground enough to give these guys the credit they deserve, but mass appeal enough to burst into the mainstream.

Jason Houston with Rock Zone productions also stated: “If you’re looking for a band that has a sound and look all their own then do yourself a favor and check out Halflit Halo and you will find out why they are one of the best new acts to come out of Richmond, Virginia in recent years, they will leave you screaming and wondering why they aren’t already superstars.
