Kurt Cobain About A Son
DVD Review
By The Atomic Chaser
This is not a documentary about Nirvana. It's barely even a documentary. 'Kurt Cobain About a Son' is an warm and moving reflection on the late musician and artist Kurt Cobain. The film was directed by AJ Schnack. Featuring audio of interviews between Cobain and journalist Michael Azerrad done for the book 'Come As You Are: The Story of Nirvana', set over ambient camera work. The film played numerous film festivals with mixed reviews, I can tell you this, it had my attention from the first to the last frame. In the film, Kurt Cobain recounts his own life from his childhood and adolescence to his days of musical discovery and later dealings with fame and often piercing insights into his life, music, and times. From his early childhood to his discovery of music and his troubled attempts to make sense of his fame as a member of Nirvana. The film features an eerie score by Death Cab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard and Nirvana producer Steve Fisk, as well as songs by some of Kurt Cobain's favorite recording artists including David Bowie and The Melvins, merged with suggestive imagery to strip away the legend and reveal the subject as a real man whose talents stood in contrast to his ability to deal with the hardships of fame. The effect is beautiful and deeply moving a total engagement in the world from which Kurt Cobain came and which he left permanently changed not long after. It's heartrending and amusing and painful, especially when he talks about getting off drugs, and you realize that Kurt Cobain was headed for suicide for years.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
