Journey :: Revelation

Frontier Records
CD Review

Journey :: RevelationJourney returns with their highly anticipated latest release, 'Revelation'. The new album is a high energy melodic rock album, showcasing a revitalized Journey. In fact, the band has released some of their best songs in ages. 'Revelation' is the first Journey album to feature the powerful vocal styling of singer Arnel Pineda. The new release finds Journey running on no less than twelve cylinders, a fine-tuned offering that sounds every bit like a band hitting their stride. The album opener "Never Walk Away " is an upbeat rocker, and is easily one of the album's standout tracks. Some of the other highlights include "Change For The Better" and "Faith In The Heartland". Arnel Pineda's, vocal's on the heartfelt power ballad "After All These Years" are amazing. "What I Needed" is another powerful track, driven by heavy guitars, reminiscent of the early Journey that so many bands have modeled themselves after. Deen Castronovo drums up a frenzy, during the hard-driving rock song, "Wildest Dream". Deen also sings most of the high harmonies heard throughout the album, proving that not only is he an amazing drummer, but he’s a dynamic vocalist as well. Neal Schon’s smoking guitars smokes through this track with a cool, eastern flavor. Bassist Ross Valory is steady throughout, a stabilizing force through the albums more driven highs and heartfelt lows. This is a remarkably solid album for a band that is essentially starting over. Arnel Pineda makes an impressive debut, and Schon and company are all in top form. There is no question about Pineda's vocal abilities. They are right on target and fit Journey like a glove. One thing that I give Journey credit for is that they stuck to the style of music they have always done. Many artists have tried to reinvent themselves by playing to today's guitar-laden post-grunge style of music. Journey isn't afraid to stick with the combination of keyboards and guitars. Journey fans should still be satisfied. All in all, it's one that I would recommend to any Journey fan. The European version of 'Revelation' comes in a beautifully packaged two cd set which includes 12 new songs and 11 re-recorded Journey classics. If you're a diehard Journey fan, you won't be disappointed. A triumphant return by one the best rock bands to ever rock the world! 'Revelation' comes highly recommended.
