Jon Oliva's Pain :: Global Warning
Locomotive Records
CD Review
By The Atomic Chaser
Hear Yee! Hear Yee! The "Mountain King" has returned to the Legions of Metal with another masterpiece of music for all to enjoy. Yes, Jon Oliva the original powerful voice behind the influential power metal band Savatage is back with his third release from his band "Jon Oliva's Pain", in the form of, 'Global Warning'. Like 2006's 'Maniacal Renderings', this album contains some guitar parts written by Jon's late brother (and Savatage co-founder) Criss Oliva. The lineup is built up of Jon of course on vocals, with Matt LaPorte (guitar), John Zahner (keyboards), Kevin Rothney (bass) and Christopher Kinder (drums). 'Global Warning' finds Jon Oliva stepping out of the box as far as musical direction goes. It's still undeniably a metal album, but it's a more versatile, more of a melodic effort. Hard hitting songs like "Adding the Cost", "You Never Know", and "Stories" are balanced out by more melodic tunes like "Walk Upon The Water" and "Firefly". Oliva's unique vocal prowess is in fine form on this album, and so are his songwriting skills. After 25 years, you still get the sense that he is growing and progressing as an artist, which is remarkable. Jon Oliva's Pain has released a trio of albums recently that are about as close to Savatage as you can get. Unlike many seasoned songwriters, Jon Oliva has always had the skills to create something timeless and powerful! From beginning to end 'Global Warning' is a true masterpiece! Jon Oliva does it once again! It's a shame this man does not get the recognition he truly deserves. Jon Oliva is a musical genius! A must have for any melodic metal fans or Savatage fans!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
