CD Review

VolbeatVolbeat's 2005 debut release "The Strength/The Sound/The Songs" put these Danish rockers on the map immediately with rave reviews almost everywhere. The band return with their highly anticipated sophomore effort, 'Rock The Rebel/Metal The Devil'. The new release is loaded with "crunchy" guitar work reminiscent of Metallica's 'Black' and 'Reload' era throughout. "Radio Girl" is a nice tribute to the 1950's and I love the southern comfort intro to "Sad Man's Tongue". For an adrenaline rush, "Devil or the Blue Cat's Song", "A Moment Forever" and "You or Them" will give you that rush you're looking for. Volbeat is made up of, Michael Poulsen on vocals and guitar, Jon Larsen on drums , Anders Kjølholm on bass and Franz "Hellboss" Gottschalk on guitar. Michael Poulsen's vocals have a unique flavor that is, yes, kind of like old Elvis but on a speed rush. The songs are pretty simplistic, without much experimentation, but they are also delightfully concise and accomplish precisely what you want in a hard rock album and that is to get your foot stomping and your head a' wagging. In an age where musicians are mixing genres left and right, but end up being more of a gimmick, Volbeat make it perfectly clear with 'Rock The Rebel'/'Metal The Devil', that old school rock and roll and heavy metal music make a very potent combination. Volbeat are so different, so good and so seriously incredible. LISTEN UP AMERICA! Volbeat are about to shake things up! I say, BRING IT ON!
