Steve Stevens :: Memory Crash
Magna Carta
CD Review
By The Atomic Chaser
Zero to sixty in three seconds. Steve Stevens shifts into high gear and never lets up on his latest release, 'Memory Crash'. This album bombards you with heavy riffs, scorching leads, and of course, all served up in the Steve Steven flavor you could ever want. From the opening, "Heavy Horizon", the "Fasten Your Seatbelt" sign comes on and gives your psyche fair warning of the stimulating auditory assault that is to come. With tracks like, "Hellcats Take The Highway" and the title track that takes no prisoners. Then you have, "Small Arms Fire", with its flamenco intro that lures you in, before Steve plugs in and lets his powerful riffs go in for the kill. Though the album is loaded with enough guitar testosterone that would make the Incredible Hulk feel like a puny human, Steve Stevens shows that speed is not needed to enforce his point. As is evident on the track, "Water On Ares", a hypnotic piece that is simply mesmerizing. The first of two vocal tracks comes in the form of a cover of the Robin Trower classic, "Day Of The Eagle" featuring Dug Pinnick of King's X. The other vocal track is, "Josephine", featuring Steve on vocals, who does a damn good job. The sonic dynamics that make up 'Memory Crash' are simply incredible. This is not an album that one just listens to, it is one that is experienced. A very deep exploration of all the possibilities on a guitar and it pushes the envelope of instrumental imagination. Steve Stevens is one of the greatest guitar players in the world and this album proves it. 'Memory Crash' is nothing short of a masterpiece and comes highly recommended.
