Irish Rockers Jaded Sun Ready To Shine
Interview
By The Atomic Chaser & The Rocker
Formed in 2003, Jaded Sun went through the paces as most other bands do, gigging and saving, to enable them to record their critically acclaimed debut EP “Raw” in 2004. The EP titled track “Raw” launched their rock profile to a national stage, becoming the most downloaded track on Ireland's premier download charts. The track broke all down load records in Ireland, staying at the top of the charts for almost 30 weeks.
In May 2005, the band headed straight into the studio with Ireland's top rock producers Chris O’Brien and Graham Murphy, Chris being known for his work with Aslan, Hot House Flowers, Adam Clayton and The Boom Town Rats.
With the “Falling On The Fears” EP being tipped for number 1 by DJ Larry Gogan for release in late 05, the band were making a name for themselves on the international scene, being asked to write the theme song for a movie remake of Apocolypse Snow, a cult snowboarding movie in the 80’s, with Hollywood backing.
The band started 2006 running with a plethora of gigs, topping the year with their amazing performance supporting Bon Jovi in Croke Park, showing them as Ireland’s hottest new rock band for years. (Jaded Sun are only the third Irish band ever to play in Ireland’s largest music arena.)
Jaded Sun spent most of last year writing and finalizing songs for their debut album. With all concentration on the record, the band played only a few gigs in 07’ including an outdoor headline gig in Zagreb Main Square, Croatia and the Hennessy Artistry, Ireland.
Since returning from America, Jaded Sun are currently preparing to start gigging and promoting their new album, 'GYPSY TRIP'.
How long have you been together as a band? How did you come up with the name JADED SUN?
The band got together in 2002, (Sean) Our guitarist made an Anagram of a friend’s name and wallah!, he got JADED SUN. I don’t know who the guy was though!
A side from the songs that are posted on your MySpace page, how many songs did you actually write for, 'Gypsy Trip'? Was that album recorded in L.A.?
We spent about two weeks writing the album. Then when it came to recording, we had over 30 songs to choose from of which 11 were picked. We then flew to Los Angeles to record in The Mouse House Studios with producer Rich Mouser.
Your sound has been described a throwback to the "Classic Rock" sound of the 70's. How would you describe your sound?
It’s definitely rooted there, that old-school sound. For example, some of the amps and drums we were using were nearly 30 years old. So we really wanted to give the classic side of our sound some authenticity. But we also wanted to have a lot of modern themes in there too so as to make the songs more accessible to fans of a lot of today’s rock music.
Who are your musical influences? Are there any bands out right now that you like listening to?
We’re, obviously influenced by a lot of the popular bands from the 70’s. Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, etc, plus a lot of Southern rock bands. Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Outlaws, and The Allman Brothers. We’re huge Black Crowes fans, so we always listen to them on the road. While we were in America we started listening to Buckcherry. They’re incredible!!
When you do get to tour the States, who would like to tour with? What can the fans here in America expect when they see you guys live?
The Black Crowes would be a huge deal. They are such a great live band and they’re gigs are like one big party. As for what people can expect from us live? There’s nowhere this band is happier, than on stage. Straight into the first song, (John) our singer just goes crazy. There’s no rules! I mean of course we play to our best abilities but we always try to have as much fun as possible. It’s infectious too! The audience gets into it and the place just takes off.
Are you getting radio play in the UK? What about satellite radio like Sirius or XM?
We have been getting steady play from stations like “Planet Rock Radio” in the UK, who have a huge listenership. It’s given us a real boost as our website and myspace are getting a lot of attention as a result of being featured.
What goals have you set for yourselves as a band?
Well it’s not like we have a plan for world domination or anything, but we always make sure that the goals we set are reachable. In the bigger picture we have aspirations of becoming a very popular rock band, as any group has. We just make sure we’re always moving forward and onward.
"Can't Stop", which is an amazing song, has received nothing but positive response from what we can see. How do you feel about the response? Have you guys shot a video for the song?
It really took us by surprise. Even before it was chosen as the single, people always picked it, as one of the stand out tracks. It’s very exciting to know that the first track off the album is receiving such a great reaction. We haven’t released a video for the single, instead concentrating on making a video for our second single. But who knows we might make a small quirky video for the single and put it online for fans to have.
