So it’s your second night selling out the House of Blues, how was it?
It’s a great. We haven’t been here in 2 years. The House of Blues in Anaheim is one of the first ‘legit venues’ we’ve headlined as Pepper. It’s cool to be back here after so long. We started playing house parties and the seediest bars you could ever imagine. We’ve really built Pepper from the ground up.
Is there any difference between playing a show back home in Hawaii and throughout The US?
Response is the same. All of our fans have the one thing in common- they just want to go to concert and have a carefree good time. Whether you’re in the Midwest or Hawaii it equates to the same response. Hawaii especially Kona everyone knows us. It’s great to have kind of roots, more of a family vibe.
Was this your first time playing warped tour on the main stage?
We’ve the done the Warped Tour 3 other times. In 2001, it was the whole tour on the Volcom stage, and that was our first national tour. This was the first year where people actually knew who we were.
When is the new cd coming out?
July 2008. As of right now, it’s still untitled.
And will there be a national summer tour?
We’re going to finish this tour on the 13th. January and February we will be recording the new album with producer Paul Leary, who did almost half of the ‘No Shame’ album. In May, head out to Europe and do a small US tour to let everyone know what’s coming up. Right after the album comes out in July, we will be doing a co-headlining tour with Slightly Stoopid throughout the United States.
What are your expectations for this album? Can we expect the same sound or did you guys experiment a little?
It’s more of us developing our sound. That’s one of our goals as a band is trying to carve out your own sound. On the no shame album that’s definitely the closest we got. We’re also expecting this album to have a life of its own, but not straying too far. One of our goals is we always try to make sure we’re not making a carbon copy of another ones of our albums.
Peppers known for a crazy show live, does that come from the crowd or you guys?
That really goes back to the spontaneity.
We don’t really make a setlist. We plot the first 4 songs and then go off of the crowds response. It really adds to the craziness and spontaneity. We really try to include the crowd as participants instead of just viewers of the concert. The involvement really pushes the energy over the top.
Bands eventually get to a point where it’s simply to pay the bills, what point is Pepper at?
We’re at the point of our career where we’ve been through independent and major labels. From here on out, we’re going to be doing everything on our own label Law Records. We’re so appreciative of the fact that we can pay our bills doing something we would be doing anyway.
Just for kicks, craziest thing done on stage or off stage?
Not just us, but this is one of the craziest things I’ve heard about a fellow Warped Tour band, NOFX. This is better than any story I could tell you. It was a few years ago on warped tour, and sometimes a major storm will move the show from the parking lot to an indoor arena. Because he heard it was going to be moved indoors, Fat Mike, the legend from NOFX, told his tour manager ‘Give me our whole guarantee we’re getting paid today in one dollar bills.’ He gets unsaid amount of thousands of dollars worth of ones. Fat Mike goes on stage to apologize and makes it rain one dollar bills for the whole show.
