Kottonmouth Kings at the Key Club
By Ray vanZyl
Saturday Oct. 6th the Kottonmouth Kings’ Cloud 9 tour in support of their new album of the same name kicked off at the Key Club - Hollywood, and AAM was there to report about this grand underground masterpiece. Many artists were there to perform, such as Danny Diablo, Sen Dog from Cypress Hill, Dirtball from the SubNoize family, and many more who rocked all night long.
Before the show kicked off, I was able to get the word from a few artists and fans, including Dirtball and Lou Dog from the Kottonmouth Kings.
AAM: Dirtball, how are you tonight?
Dirtball: I’m pretty excited about tonight; hoping for the best.
AAM: How is your tour going so far?
Dirtball: Well, the Cloud 9 tour actually kicked off in New York Sept. 13th. So far it’s been going great.
AAM: Other than “Cloud 9,” what new albums do you have coming out?
Dirtball: I just came out with a new CD titled, “Raptillion.” I also have a new one in the works. Big B just came out with a new album, “More to Hate.” And Danny Diablo’s CD is coming out on the 9th of October.
AAM: What are the similarities between your new album and your older ones?
Dirtball: All SubNoize albums still have the same original vibe. With Big B's CDs almost every album has a different style. But the two albums that I have out have the same vibes but different settings of lifestyles.
AAM: What can people expect to see on this tour? Are you going to be singing mostly new songs or are you going to be mixing it up a little?
Dirtball: Basically, Kottonmouth Kings has a whole bunch of new material out, but we’re going to mix it up with the old and the new.
AAM: What is your favorite song to do live?
Dirtball: Well, overall my favorite song I love to do live is “Batter Swing,” because I like doing songs I can keep a fast, easy, moving flow with.
AAM: Oh, that’s a really nice one – I really enjoy that song. What is your favorite place to perform live?
Dirtball: I have to say House of Blues Las Vegas and Chicago.
AAM: Do you have any words for the fans out there?
Dirtball: Support SubNoize and keep buying our CDs and material!
Lou Dog was being kept busy by fans, but he did tell me he’s making a new drum-trike for the new album “Cloud 9,” and he has been loving every minute of being part of Kottonmouth Kings.
After a li’l while checking the interior of the Key Club, I got a few words from the fans. Most fans have been listening to the Kottonmouth Kings for about 6 years, though some have been fans since their first album in 1994. Some are so devoted to the music that they have gotten tattoos of the Kottonmouth Kings logo and have seen every show in Cali.
Let’s get to the show. It was kicked off with a big bang by Danny Diablo with his usual hard core demonic voice. By the 3rd song, “Livin’ by the Gun,” the crowd had already started a mosh pit (which I gladly took part in). They had the crowd in a pretty good grip of energy.
By the first set break everyone was getting ready for Dirtball and Big B. The crowd started going a bit nuts when they came on stage, and they held the crowd with good songs like “White Trash Life.” Then Big B stepped off and Dirtball made that stage his. One of the songs he was really successful with was “Batter Swing,” which as he had said is his fav song to do live, and he did it best. He kept the crowd entertained and pleased.
After Dirtball did a few songs, a bunch of the SubNoize family came on stage to do a few songs. When they said, “Jump,” the crowd jumped; when they said, “Mosh,” the crowd moshed. They had the people enslaved with their underground evolution.
Next up was Sen Dog (special guest from Cypress Hill). The air was filled with a thug atmosphere. He really knew what he was doing and would stop throughout his songs and dance with the beats. The crowd, by the way, loved it. They were also entertained when Obi Thrice came out with his harmonica and created awesome music while Sen Dog spit rhymes with it. Sen Dog also kept the crowd entertained when he started making human-made beats while another artist rapped along.
When Sen Dog was done, the fans started yelling out “Kottonmouth Kings!” over and over. Finally they appeared, and the crowd went wild. They played “Where the Weed At,” “Bong Toking Alcoholics,” and for the ladies, “Tangerine Sky” – which I have to say gave us a bit of a break from all the hard core moshing for such a li’l club. The crowds’ most favored song was “King Klick,” which made everyone’s night! Everyone was going mad dog crazy.
The Cloud 9 tour is a real winner: The performers kept the crowd high with energy. There was never a dull moment, and there was constant entertainment and enjoyment. I have to say I would go to another show in a heartbeat.
