Megadeth :: That One Night: Live In Buenos Aires

CD Review
By The Atomic Chaser
Recorded right after the end of Gigantour 1 in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 2005, Megadeth put on one of their most memorable shows, if not their best. That is what you get with this 2 disc set. Instead of going through the motions of a typical "greatest hits live" CD, these Megadeth classics sound fresh and fierce, making the studio versions, which I love, seem anemic by comparison. Listen to the opening blitzkrieg of "Blackmail the Universe" and you'll know what I mean. This is maximum volume guitar ferocity that goes way beyond previous versions, and it only lets up once, for the acoustic "Coming Home To Argentina". The legendary intro to "Holy Wars" sounds like a full blown riot out of control, and "Reckoning Day" sounds like a freight train going off the tracks at full speed. Then you have my personal favorite, "Hangar 18", that just sent chills up and down my spine. Whether live or in studio, Megadeth have always come through for their fans. Megadeth are worshipped like the true 'Metal Gods' that are in Argentina and on that one special night they showed that country their appreciation ten fold. Listening TO THE audience is almost haunting as they sing the guitar parts as well as the lyrics! That had to be an incredible rush for the performers. 'That One Night: Live in Buenos Aires' captures the new incarnation of Megadeth, and does it well. I actually think they sound heavier than ever. Guitarist Glen Drover used to be in King Diamond, and his brother Shawn on drums has a beefier sound than previous Megadeth stickmen. When I listen to Dave perform on this live recording, I hear someone still bursting with energy and anger, but time has allowed him to harness that and become, arguably, the best at what he does. There's no crowd like this for Megadeth in any other part of the world. Megadeth fans, this is a must have. Thanks Dave!
