The Grand Marquee’s Grand Entrance: The Grand Marquee EP
By Meijin Bruttomesso
The Grand Marquee’s intrigue originates from its midnight black cover adorned with The Grand Marquee EP written in florid white script, and a mysterious woman’s face enveloped in a flowery headdress. The Grand Marquee label themselves as “psychedelic-sex rock,” a description made apparent by the echoing sound scheme of the album, hazy distortion, perpetuated through the six tracks, and the lyrics’ seductive imagery. This psychedelic-sex rock sound is defined by layers of a quick pop-rock beat that remains consistent throughout: heavy slap-bass lines, angst-laden vocals with echoing distortion, and floating high-pitched guitar suspensions. “Tunnelvision” laments the struggle of “making it” when “you’re so young and wasted,” and “M.I.U.” recalls a rocky relationship through fuzzy song style. Haunting vocals murmuring adult-themed messages, over crashing drums and sinister bass drones reflect the sultriness of “Red Light Girls.” While “Perfect” maintains the pushing tempo and heavy reverb, its treble cadences create lighter vibes, and “Sunshine” stands out with its particularly catchy and throbbing dance club beat. Concluding the EP, “Into the End” is an angry admission, “I never wanted you… don’t follow me into the end…,” characterized by an airy ambiance, and menacing harmonies moaning in the guitar and bass. Although the sound effects and rhythms seem somewhat repetitive, those chosen for this group's first EP maintain The Grand Marquee’s initial magnetism.
