My Evolution at the Roxy

May 12, 2007

By Mike Cavanaugh

My EvolutionThe Players: Burgos, vocals; M-Lo, guitar; mO, bass; Micahtime, drums.

It’s a typical night on the Sunset Strip with people milling about outside passing from one club to the next. Taking center stage under the spinning disco ball at the famed Sunset strip venue, The Roxy, is My Evolution. With no announcement bringing the band on stage the black curtain rises to expose four guys plugged in and ready to rock From the first note this is an assault, a non-stop rock and roll ride that barely slows down for a breath. This is a rock show My Evolution style.

Having seen My Evolution live a number of times I’d become accustomed to certain things. But this show is different. For starters the guys are not dressed in their trademark black button down shirts. Instead Burgos is dressed in a long-sleeve black t-shirt and M-Lo is shirtless leaving mO and Micahtime to even out a 2 on 2 shirts vs. skins foursome on stage. But as the set progressed all the guys had stripped away their shirts to expose tattoos and sweet mixing with the red and yellow glow from the stage lights. Another thing missing was the go-go dancers for songs “Freakshow” and “Little Miss Thing”. But that doesn’t mean there weren’t girls dancing, quite the contrary. My Evolution is a band that has appeared on Playboy TV a couple times and girls are drawn to their sound and the gyrations it creates are uncontrollable. And not to be My Evolutionunnoticed a couple guys attempted a 4 person mosh during “You’re All Mine” but it was a weak hearted attempt that didn’t last long.

As for the performance on stage, the guys are rock solid musicians. Micahtime on drums, as the name implies, is steady with his beats. Adding to the steadiness behind the kit Micah’s performance tonight is a bit more aggressive and animated then I’ve seen at other shows. mO’s bass work is consistent and steady and a great compliment to Micahtime’s drum work. M-Lo plays the guitar with lots of emotion and energy while bouncing back and forth along the stage like a rock and roll guitarist should. And Burgos is the perfect front man. Burgos’s stage presence is powerful, captivating, and engaging. Unfortunately the vocal mix was a bit low causing Burgos’s vocals to be drowned out by the other guys at times but he never let it slow him down or take away from his energetic and highly spirited delivery of well written and structured lyrics.

With plenty of style, presence, excellent musicianship, and professionalism, the guys in My Evolution give everything they have when they hit the stage.
