Army of WHO?!?!

Little by little fans poured into the Key Club on Thursday night to see Army of Anyone. I had not yet heard of them, but judging by the members of the band I had a pretty good idea of what they would sound like. As I stood in the midst of the crowd, I overheard people saying “I’ve never heard them, but my friends tell me their album rocks” and “they have great chemistry.” Everyone was anxious and patiently waiting for them to take the stage.
Army of Anyone’s all-star lineup consists of Dean and Robert DeLeo of Stone Temple Pilots, Richard Patrick of Filter, and ex-David Lee Roth drummer, Ray Luzier. The band came together as Richard Patrick was writing material for a new Filter album and called the DeLeo brothers for some help. From that point on, Army of Anyone was formed and the rest is history.
The house music was lowered as the stage lights dimmed and Dean DeLeo took the stage with his double neck Fender Stratocaster. The crowd reacted as if the gods of music had appeared before them. Soon thereafter his band mates joined him and one of the best rock shows began. The music definitely sounded familiar, but different. Their music was a mix of Dean DeLeo’s complex STP chords with the punch and non-stop energy of Filter. Richard Patrick’s screaming vocals were amazing and never sounded better. Ray Luzier, the unsung hero, was the driving force with his thunderous, yet tight, drum beats. The DeLeo brothers looked as if they were having the time of their lives on stage. The chemistry of the band was phenomenal.
After every song, I became more and more anxious to hear what was coming up next. Off of their new album, they played songs such as “It Doesn’t Seem To Matter” and “Goodbye.” They even played some old hits from Stone Temple Pilots and Filter like “Big Bang Baby,” “Vasoline,” “Welcome To The Fold,” and “Take A Picture.” Throughout the night the crowd was captivated by
the band’s performance and made their presence known by singing along to nearly every song. The band was in constant interaction with the crowd throughout the entire show. Richard Patrick and Robert DeLeo made the crowd feel as if they were part of the performance. Hands were raised and heads were rocking back and forth as the crowd praised Army of Anyone. This has to be one of the best rock shows I’ve seen in a while.
After the show, I got a chance to meet the band members at the after party. Richard Patrick, Robert and Dean DeLeo were three of the most refined and humble musicians I have ever met. Both stated that they were having a lot of fun with this new band and are very proud of the new CD. Tune into INDIE 103.1 to hear their single “Goodbye.” If you haven’t done so already, go out and pick up Army of Anyone’s new self-titled album, it is definitely worth every penny. If you have opportunity, go see them LIVE… you won’t be disappointed.
