Poets and Pornstars :: “Poets and Pornstars”
By Mike Cavanaugh
From the start these guys have my attention. Not only did I receive a 5 song sampler but also a DVD EPK. All you bands that want to get noticed get out a pen and paper and take a lesson from this band. Professionalism and presentation are what gets you noticed. Now I’m not saying every band should submit a DVD EPK but remember A&R peeps and other record types want to know something about you other than your music. And don’t do it cheesy with a buddy who has a camcorder at a backyard BBQ. Unless of course you primarily play backyard BBQ’s. Key word above is “professionalism”. The EPK is short but like the saying goes, it’s not quantity but quality. Granted, killer songs do wonders for you but if you don’t present the package well it goes unnoticed. No way to not notice this packaging or this band. Well done.
As for the songs, I’ve been lucky enough to see these guys live a couple times and they already have a fan built into this review. This is what rock and roll sound should look and sound like. The songs are simply delivered with a killer groove and constant energy. The lyrics so catchy they stick in your head causing you to sing out loud in the office annoying your coworkers - ‘I wanna be your monkey baby...” . Oops, looks like I’ll need to explain that one to Human Resources. My one criticism, because what would a review be without likes and dislikes, is the background vocals in “Get Your Kicks” and “Monkey”, which are distracting, a bit hoaky, and just not necessary.
