Thunder :: Robert Johnson's Tombstone
CD Review
By The Atomic Chaser
UK veteran rockers THUNDER return with their brand of classic blues based hard rock with their latest offering, 'ROBERT JOHNSON'S TOMBSTONE', what is easily their best recording to date. The songs and production is amazing throughout. I thought their last outing, 'The Magnificent Seventh' was great, but this one blew me away from the minute I hit play. What I can’t understand is how the music industry here in America could turn their backs on a band of this caliber and talent? Thunder is one of those 'undiscovered legends' of rock n' roll! Which they prove ten fold with this record. There is not a weak track to be found. Personal fav’s are the title track, which has a great feel about it and you can't help but tap your feet. I can tell you this; the boys were definitely channeling the spirit of Mr. Johnson. Then there is, "Dirty Dreams", "Millions" and "Last Man Standing" that are solid balls of rock and roll thanks to Luke Morely's thunderous bluesy guitar riffs. Danny Bowes vocals sound better than ever. I've always considered him one of the best voices in rock. Reminding me of Paul Rogers (yeah, he's THAT good!), with a hint of David Coverdale. If you love “hard rockin” music with great hooks, tasteful soloing, and downright incredible songwriting ability, this record is just what the doctor ordered and one I would not hesitate in recommending. The thing about Thunder's offering in general is that it brings you back to what was truly great about driving blues rock before it got taken over by the hair bands in the 80's. This is rock and roll that is reminiscent of the past but never imitative and not revisionist. Thunder has crafted their most dense and representative album yet, filled with steely licks and explosive melodies you'll be playing air guitar to it after the first listen.
