Now, I’m not big on Rebel flags but when you cross it with a pentagram, that changes things. I don’t care if you’re from a red state or a blue state, if you’ve ever cranked a car stereo or seen some bar band raise the roof then you’ll appreciate ISABELLE”S GIFT. They reign from South Carolina and play heavy handed stoned out rock with songs that are short and sweet like a pink rock girl. Their latest CD “”American Idle” was produced by Jared Little (Bloodhound Gang) and Patrick Hutchinson (Queens of the Stone Age, Desert Sessions. “American Idle” is out on the Jimmy Franks label. The CD opens with the title track, which hits you with low-end fuss ala FUMANCH or MONSTER MAGNET. Songs like “Downer” have a DANZIG feel while “Bring me the head of Mark Byers” has a MISFITS touch.
“Oh how the mighty have fallen” sounds like the older ROLLINS BAND stuff while “That’s Mr. Faggot to you” gas vocals that are at times spoken. Whether your truck has a gun rack or you Honda has a subwoofer, you’ll dig rockin out to songs like “Long way back” or “The Wound” which reminds me of COC. How can you go wrong with “If I die tonight” with it’s heavy ass, heart pumping bass line with trailer trash lyrics that mention both GG ALLEN and HAND the first, yet sounds like MINISTRY? You cant. There’s even a SABBATH style riff that opens the song “Edward 40 Hands” another low end hummer that goes straight to your balls., Just like Sabbath of old, they throw us a curve ball with a slower, more mellow tune called “Coltrane.” So if any of this wets your appetite for destruction, just let me say this, if hell is in the south ant the devil is a redneck then he’s listening to Isabelle’s Gift.
