CD Review
By The Rocker
After seeing Motorhead open for THE BLIZZARD OF OZZ in 1980, I was hooked. Since then, not only have they become one of the most influential metal bands of all time, but Lemmy is one of the greatest song writers metal has ever seen. Did they ever change or sell out? Hell no! It’s still fast, it’s still heavy and it’s still loud, very loud. What makes Motorhead so great? I’ll tell you, it’s because they still sound like Motorhead. The Lemmy on “Kiss of Death” is the same Lemmy I saw open for Ozzy in 1980, on Motorhead’s Ace of Spaces tour. He still strums his bass like a rhythm guitar player and he still sings like a pirate with his chin up in the air. But it all comes down to the songs and their latest Sanctuary Records release “Kiss of Death” is loaded with classic Motorhead songs. Fromr the fast & furious opener “Sucker”, to the 2006 remake of their own song “Ramones”. The onslaught never lets up. Check out the opening bass line of the bedtime fantasy called “Under The Gun” or the heavy bass line of “King of the World”. The acoustic beginning of “God Was Never on Our Side” is just a tease as the song kicks in and explodes like an orgasmatron only to have strings added for texture.
This may well be one of the greatest songs Mr. Kilmeister has ever written. Great production from Cameron Webb can not be overlooked either. As a lyricist, Lemmy pulls no punches, sometimes comical, sometimes dead on serious. It’s the lyrics and music as a whole that make up the whole package of a Motorhead song. This CD is 3 guys making music that plows through your speakers like a locomotive, leaving you breathless and deaf. If you haven’t bought a Motorhead disc in a while, then treat yourself to some hard rock lovin’ from Lemmy & the boys, it’s called Kiss of Death. I hope you live to tell your friends.
