Deep Freeze :: The Return of Jack Frost
Interview

By The Atomic Chaser and The Rocker

Guitarist Jack Frost is certainly one of the hardest working guitarists in heavy metal today. In addition to playing on, mixing, and producing albums with his band, Seven Witches (that featured Joey Vera of Armored Saint), Jack also lent his talents to the likes of Savatage, Metalium, Bronx Casket Company (with D.D. Verni and Tim Mallare of Overkill), and Speed (with Aaron Randell and Ray Hartman of Annihilator). Also, Jack has appeared on a multitude of tribute albums, including tributes to Dio, Helloween, The Scorpions, Twisted Sister, W.A.S.P., Judas Priest, and Accept.

In 2006 Jack Frost unveils his latest solo work titled, 'OUT IN THE COLD'. Featuring 11 new blistering tracks that are as sharp as razors and will definitely push your speakers to the limit. The Rocker and I spoke with Jack about his latest release and what he has planned for the future. Here is what Jack shared with us...

AAM: First off Jack, the new album, 'OUT IN THE COLD', is a monster! We mean that is a good way.

Jack Frost: Thanks guys, that really mean a lot to me.

AAM: Alright then, lets talk about your latest release. How different is the new album from your debut?

JF: Pretty much the same as the debut. It is a continuation from the debut.

AAM: How would you describe the overall vibe of the new album?

JF: You know, I would describe the vibe in one word, FUN! It is that kind of album you put on and just turn it up and have a blast. I had fun recording it. It is all about having fun and man did I have FUN!! The sound and the musicians are just top notched. This album has everything for everybody.

AAM: Do you approach recording your solo material like you approach Seven Witches? Speaking, will Seven Witches be touring soon?

JF: Recording the new record wasn't like what I do with Witches. For that, I lock myself in a room for months. On my solo material I have a more non-stressful approach. Yes, Seven Witches will be touring again very soon. We just released a DVD.

AAM: Talk to us about the singers you featured on the new album.

JF: When people say "PRO", the guys I have singing on the album are truly professional. From Ted Poley to Neil Turbin and Paul Shortino. Also Terry Illous from XYZ. These guys are simply the best. I had a blast recording with these guys.

AAM: What’s it like working with Ted(Poley) and Terry(Illous)?

JF: Working with Ted and Terry was the sh*%$t! I remember talking to Terry before recording the album. Talking to him about getting together and recording. A few months later I sent him the music and he laid down the vocals at Paul Shortino's studio and it was done.

AAM: Meaning that...

JF: Well, I put it this way. If you like Poison, you'll like this record. The same can be said that if you like Slayer, you will like it as well. Something for everyone’s taste.

AAM: 4 of the 11 tracks on, 'OUT IN THE COLD' are covers. You cover one of our favorite songs of all time, April Wine's "Sign Of The Gyspy Queen".

JF: How can you cover a great song like that and make it any better? That is just a great song and April Wine are rock gods! People take it the wrong way. They say that I am disrespecting the bands by covering their songs. Disrespecting!? Are you kidding me! This is my way of taking my hat off to them and saying thank you for their music. I grew up listening to Foreigner, 38. Special and The Babys.

AAM: Speaking of The Babys, "Head First", who's idea was that?

JF: That was Ted Poley idea. He told me, let's do a Babys' song. I said, 'Are you serious?!, Hell yeah let's do it!'.

AAM: What about coming out to the west coast for some shows?

JF: I will be making my way back to the west coast for NAMM 2007. So, if you know of anyone who wants to book me for some shows let me know. We will probably do some Witches shows as well. I will definitely drop you guys a line when I get to town.

AAM: Excellent! The Rocker and I are ready willing and able! Jeff thank you so much for your sharing time with us brother. We will definitely catch up when you get into town.

JF: You bet! Thanks to you guys and All Access for the support!
