93.1 Jack FMDo you know Jack? If not, you missed Jacks first mega-concert show at the Version Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine. JACK'S mega-concert show and one word that is repeatedly coming to mind now is WOW. This show was the single biggest fundraising event ever, raising money for a cure for autism. The pit tickets alone raised $25,000 and the whole event rose close to $50,000 proceeds going to benefit Autism. There were a planes flying by with messages for the crowd, “Dance, Dance Dance, we’ll judge you from here” and others. The multitude was there in full force to a sold out show. What a way to kick off your first summer bash, Jack. The sun was high in the sky the smell of chicken and tri-tip in the air and the sounds of rock and roll are filling the vicinity were the crowd was pushing to get to the stage. Every year we are waiting for a show that will be marked as the one to remember this one could have foot that bill. Rocking out with Def Leppard, Journey, Billy Idol, Cheap Trick and the Violent Femmes. People were all ready indulging in the refreshments and passing out before the main show even began.

I got there as Cheap Trick was on stage, “I Want You to Want Me,” the whole crowd is up and chanting back to the stage. 93.1 Jack FMThen the slide into “Were all Right”, Rick Nielsen brings out his five necked guitar and the people were rockin each song he displayed a different guitar. “Dream Police”, Robin Zander sounds as good as ever. I was very disappointed that they didn’t perform the “Flame.”

Up next was Billy Idol, he comes out belting “Dancing with Myself” jumping around turning up the heat on stage, Billy Idol has been creating heat of his own in his European tour allowing them to experience the famous punk rocker for the first time. For the next songs he proceeded to strip down to nothing but his pants singing “Rebel Yell.” Billy together with his first class musicians creates enjoyment undeniably winning the hearts of young and old. Idol introduced a few new songs in the set. When singing “Flesh for Fantasy” everyone was on their feet singing along busting into “White Wedding” screams so loud you could not hear the words from Billy. While singing “Eyes With out a Face” there were a few microphone problems and too much bass but otherwise it was good. “Mony Mony” Billy comes out sporting a beetle juice jacket for a little the wardrobe flair. The crowd wearing mullets and dancing rocking out then all of a sudden the drummer jumps out grabs a guitar and starts playing and Billy grabs a guitar and they have this blow out competition with three leads to end the show, very impressive.

During the intermission they were playing Neil Diamond, and what was funny the whole crowd starts singing “Sweet Caroline” as loud as they were singing “White Wedding” and Neil wasn’t even on the stage. (Like he would be at this type of show)

Journey - NEAL SCHON guitarist comes out with a solo opening playing the national anthem to a blacked out crowd and a light shined spot light. The crowd yells, then JOURNEY illuminates from behind in larger then life letters on the screen. The bands current line-up in attendance; (guitarist Neal Schon, bassist Ross Valory, keyboardist Jonathan Cain, singer Jeff Scott Soto and drummer Deen Castronovo). JOURNEY was forced to make a lead singer change on nationwide tour. Jeff Scott Soto to assumed Journey’s lead singer duties starting on July 7th in Bristow, VA due to 93.1 Jack FMSteve Augeri throat infection. Jeff’s voice, although not as distinct as Steve Perry or Steve Augeri, still belted out the lyrics with precision and strength. Many of the readers of All Access know Jeff Scott Soto and it is nice to see a native Californian meet his dream head on. “Ask the Lonely”, “Wheel in the Sky”. Then Deen Castronovo sang “One Love”, sounding very close to the original. The whole band seemed to be jockeying and picking up the slack, if there was any due to the change of the lead singer. “Chain Reaction” lights go to the keyboardist, and then Deen Castronovo sings “Open Arms” and sings it wonderfully. The lead singing went between Jeff and Deen. “Highway Man” and the well known “Faithfully” were sung by Deen the drummer doing an awesome job of singing these famed songs and playing with out skipping a beat. “Don’t Stop Believing”, “Any Way you want it,” “Separate Ways”, were all songs in the set. Sure I would have loved to have seen Steve Perry in the line up but the show will go on. And Journey as always, put on an outstanding performance.

Def Leppard pays hard-rocking tribute to its musical heroes of the '60s and '70s on its brand-new album, "Yeah!" The band puts its own spin on rock and roll. They have come full circle back to the golden age of the glam rock that first inspired them. Their line up (guitarists Vivian Campbell, Phil Collen, bassist Rick “Sav” Savage, vocals Joe Elliot and drummer Rick Allen). Def Leppard opened their set with “Lets get Rocked” big crunchy guitars and giant drums, everything louder than anything else rocking the set and stage. Def Leppard is not a Metal band it has the feel of that but underneath there sound there is just a pop song. They sang most of their songs off the Rock of Ages: The Definitive Collection, including “Bringing on the Heartache”, “Foolin”, “Hysteria”, and Vivian Campbell comes out with a solo and then also bassist Rick has one of his own. Hit after hit with “Rocket” and “Photograph” “Are You Getting It”, Rick rocked on the drums everyone up out of their seats yelling and cheering them on as the leave the stage. Thinking I was going to be disappointed not hearing my favorite Def Leppard song they come back and sing “LOVE BITES” I was nuts, then finishing out the night with “Pour Some Sugar on me.” What a splendid performance one I will remember for some time.
