For many within the Metal community, this show featuring Slayer, Lamb Of God, Children Of Bodom, Mastodon, and others, was an alternative to this years Ozzfest, which had more of a Hot Topic Mall Metal feel to it. Even though these bands represent more of a true Metal vibe, it didn’t really feel like a festival per se, But more of one great big kick ass Metal show!
Unfortunately we missed most of Mastodon, unaware that they and Bodom had been rotating time slots on this tour. However, we were able to catch the glorious set closer "Blood And Thunder." Mastodon have a new album on Warner Brothers coming out in September entitled "Blood Mountain," and will be headlining a show at the Henry Fonda Theatre in September. Even bigger things await this band.
Children Of Bodom did a fine job with their speed Metal riffs complemented with some eerie keyboard sounds. The Lamb Of God were up next showing off their brand of heaviness with the likes of "Redneck" from their newly anticipated album. There was no wall of death this time, but a fine pit was flowing throughout.
As great as all these younger upstarts are, Slayer reigned supreme this evening. For a band that has been at it for over 20 years, you would think they would be tired and worn by now, especially playing as fast and loud as they do. Make no mistake, Slayer are still the kings. And with original drummer Dave Lombardo back in the band, there is no stopping them. All the songs performed tonight were utter classics. How can you go wrong with the likes of "Reigning Blood," "Mandatory Suicide," "War Ensemble," and "South Of Heaven?" Evil reared its ugly head throughout as "Hell Awaits" and "Antichrist" echoed through the hall. Even the new single "Cult" from their current Billboard Top 5 "Christ Illusion" release felt like an old favorite.
All in all it was a very fine show indeed and, a great alternative to Ozzfest!
