CD Review
By The Atomic Chaser
Sometimes everything just clicks into place and you know that it is as it should be. The trendy term today for this phenomenon is called, "Feng Shui." Whatever you want to call this coming together in harmony, its presence permeates on the long awaited fourth release from the L.A. based rockers Tribe Of Gypsies, 'Dweller On The Threshold'. Ever since the band's mind-blowing self-titled debut release in 1996 I have always consider Tribe of Gypsies to be the best example of Latin tinged rock I've ever heard.
The new material sounds amazing. Latin flavor rock that will move you both physically and spiritually. The Tribe's new line up, Roy Z on guitars, Chas West on vocals, Ray Rodriguez on keyboards, Elvis Balladares on percussion, Christian Byrne on guitars Dave Moreno on drums and Juan Perez on bass. The Tribe open the album with the instrumental piece, "Big Sky Presences" then like a burst of adrenaline shoots into the guitar driven, "Ride On". The new album also marks a dawn of new era for the Tribe in the form of new vocalist, Chas West (Bonham). Whose vocal styling blends in perfectly with the overall sound of the band. As is evident on tracks like, "Desolate Chile" and my choice for first single, the soul moving, "Halos".
The Tribe also served up a spicy version of the Van Halen classic, "Ain't Talkin''Bout Love". The driving force behind the band is guitarist, Roy Z., who also does another outstanding job producing the album along with the legendary team of Richie Polodor and Bill Cooper (Steppenwolf, Three Dog Night). Roy got to showcase his talents on, "Flying Tigers, Cyring Dragons", where he unleashes the fury in his fingers with unbridled passion. The explosive percussion and dynamic guitar work is unbelievable and will elevate the blood pressure.
All in all an outstanding recording that will blow you away from start to finish! Hard to believe a band of this magnitude and caliber has gone unnoticed here in America. 'Dweller On The Threshold', in my book is a contender for album of the year and comes highly recommended! Viva la TRIBE OF GYPSIES!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
