By The Atomic Chaser & The Rocker
There is no need to give Joe Lynn Turner an introduction. Having sung on Rainbow and Deep Purple, many solo albums and in the Hughes/Turner Project, Mother's Army and Brazen Abbot. Surely Joe deserves to be recognized by anybody who has listened to rock music for the last 20 years. The last time Joe Lynn Turner was in town he made such an impact that the rock and roll fans here in the city of angels could not wait until Joe came back to town. This time around Joe will be kicking out the jams at the new rock and roll hot spot, The Vine Street Lounge on August 20th.
Aside from returning to the city of angels. Joe Lynny Turner has been quite a busy person. Invovled with a number of projects. Earlier this year his release 'Fire Without Flame' with guitarist, Akira Kajiymama. Also his latest solo release, 'The Usual Suspects', is recieving rave reviews from fans around the world. Most recently he has formed a new AOR outfit called, SUNSTORM.
The Rocker and I fortunate to speak to one of the greatest rock vocalists around to talk to him about his return to the city of angels, his latest project SUNSTORM and of course that voice.
AAM: Great to hear you coming back to L.A! Where are you playing this time around?
JLT: Thanks man, I love playing in L.A., there is great vibe there. I will be playing at placed called, THE VINESTREET LOUNGE.
AAM: Will you have the same band backing you up as you did last time you played L.A.
JLT: The Rock All Stars will be backing me once again. There know my set and the chemistry we have as a unit is tight. I am so comfortable playing with the guys on the stage.
AAM: You have to be one of the busiest people in rock today. If its not your solo careers its various projects like, Brazen Abbot or HTP. What else do you in the fire?
JLT: Man, I am off to Japan to do recording with an orchestra that is doing Deep Purple songs. That should be fun. Then back right in time for the show at The Vine Stree Lounge. Man, its been non-stop for me.
AAM: What about HTP with Glenn (Hughes), will there be a HTP 3?
JLT: Unfortunately, there will not be a HTP 3. Nothing against Glenn, I love him like a brother. His latest, 'Music For The Devine' is a great album. Glenn wanted to work on his own material. As did I. Again, much to love to Glenn. We just thought it was time to go our own ways.
AAM: Let's talk about SUNSTORM, your latest project.
JLT: I was writing at the time for a more commercial market and was concentrating my abilities on songwriting especially. I think the songs I wrote at the time, can stand the test of time because they are classics. A great song is a great song, no matter when it’s released. Those songs should have made it to my second album for Elektra, but then I fired the producer and then the mess started and we decided to part ways with the label and nothing happen for no reason.
AAM: What it like working with Jim Peterik? Didn't you cover "Vehicle" on 'Covers'?
JLT: Jim and I are great friends and I admire him a lot. It is a little known fact that Jim was called in to help the songwriting for Deep Purple’s follow up to the “Slaves and Masters” album. Together with me and Ritchie, we wrote some killer stuff which was later rejected by the other guys, since they thought it changed the direction of the band too much. Yes, I did cover 'Vehicles', I love that song and that is why I covered it.
AAM: The CD sounds great an AOR instant classic! Will there be a SUNSTORM 2?
JLT: There is plenty of other songs from that era that I believe should be heard… maybe someday” …the doors to the SUNSTORM chapter II are opened from now, it will be up to the fans to decide whether they will want it to happen.
AAM: As always its great to talk to one of the finest voices ever heard in rock and roll, Joe Lynn Turner. Thanks so much for sharing Joe!
JLT: Thank you guys, god bless and see you soon!
