It was a definite nod to the old school, as two classic bands teamed up for a night of some good head bangin' fun. First up were legendary San Francisco Thrashers Death Angel. Now I haven't seen this band since the late '80s when they opened for Motorhead. Well, time has been gracious to them, as they sound just as good if not better. Opening up with "3rd Floor," the band instantly proved why they are still a relevant force, especially with the resurgence of Thrash Metal amongst the younger sect. Singer Mark Osegueda still has his pipes in tact and shined on songs such as "Bored." Still promoting their 2004 reunion release "The Art Of Dying," Death Angel are here to stay.
Next were headliners Armored Saint. With lead vocalist John Bush now out of Anthrax, it was high time for these guys to get back together. The song selection and performance was flawless. I still say John Bush has one of the greatest Metal voices of all time and deserves to be acknowledged as such amongst the Metal community. Gems such as "Aftermath," Delirious Nomad." Lesson Well Learned," and "Reign Of Fire" spotlighted their catalogue of righteous anthems. John Bush precluded "Warzone" with the irony of that song being written during the first gulf war. And now here we are 15 years later going through the same mess. "Tension" was directed at people who need drama in their lives to exist, which John so adamantly disdains. And of course, he wanted to make it clear that he shares no bloodline with the current man in the White House, obviously pointing out his distaste for that individual.
Armored Saint don't play together that often, and that's why this show was so special. I'm sure the fans want the band to soldier on with more shows and a new album. Let's hope they keep it together for many more years to come.
