CD Review
By Francisco H. Ciriza
Greg Stephens seems to have mastered the art of summary. Gathering up his folk, blues, country, and rock influences, Stephens and his solid backing band offer this collection of down-home cooked, often twang-tinged songs. Perhaps best suited for a long drive or throwing down some cold suds, the songs on I Don’t Know don’t break any new ground, but Stephens, who sounds like a smooth-voiced John Mellencamp, has a simple honesty in his lyrics and musical approach that is both alluring and endearing. Simply put, he strives to be and is believable. Fans of the Eagles and the aforementioned Mellencamp will feel right at home with songs like the easy-feeling “Desperate Man” and the neo-blues confession “Keeps Me Hanging.”
