It was hot, it was dirty and it was a bloody mess! The Rocker and I were once again smack in the middle of the heavy metal party called Ozzfest. With last year's show still leaving a bad taste in our mouths – with Sharon Osbourne admitting to cutting Iron Maiden's power – what would be in store for this year? Every year people are waiting for an event to take place that will blow their minds. Not every day will the world take part in an extravaganza such as Ozzfest. So you think?
This year's Ozzfest, or what we would describe as "Ozz-Mess," didn't really get our metal juices flowing, to answer the question of what we were in store for. Ozzfest is all about having a good time, not being hounded by security asking you, “Where's your pass?” We realize they were just doing their jobs, but there were a few who had that drill sergeant mentality that was just too much. Too many chiefs and not enough Indians. Can't we just all get along! It is true that Ozzfest can cause mayhem of some sorts. The water, beer and food were highly overpriced. I know, stop bitching! Don't get us wrong, we had a great time and we loved all the bands that played, but it just didn't have the punch that previous Ozzfests had.
As we arrived, the festival kicked off on the second stage,
where Strapping Young Lad, A Life Once Lost, Full Blown Chaos and All That Remains are among the other acts booked for this season that really put on great mind-blowing and ear-busting sets! Then the air raid sirens kicked on, which could only mean one thing: INCOMING MUTHAF**KERS! Black Label Society erupted like a nuclear bomb, setting the crazed metalheads into a pit of total chaos! Way to go Zakk! Sorry we couldn't catch up with you after the show: We were asked to leave even though we had credentials. Yet another example of the ATTITUDE we had to deal with.
After a short break, Ozzy took the stage, and to be honest with you, the Prince of Darkness didn't really bring it like he has in the past. But Zakk's guitar playing saved Ozzy's set by doing what he loves to do, mostly improvising and throwing in pinch harmonics (he threw pinch harmonics into “Paranoid” and “Crazy Train”).
Then everybody went to the main stage to see the six big headliners of Ozzfest: DragonForce, Lacuna Coil, Hatebreed, Avenged Sevenfold, Disturbed, and System Of A Down). DragonForce played for 30 minutes and was a serious letdown because you could not hear their guitars – which was seriously sad because they are extremely fast and that’s what they are all about. Their singing was great, and they played music off their new album “Inhuman Rampage.”
Then Lacuna Coil came out and put on one of the best sets of the festival. Cristina and the boys electrified the crowd with songs from their catalog, including their latest, “Karmacode.” Next was Hatebreed, then the big hitters.
Avenged Sevenfold came on and rocked the house with their songs. Then after the first two songs of their set, dead silence! Initially we thought it was due to the chaos that was happening in the lawn section with a fire breaking out. Then we found out it was due to a power outage. Like the metal troopers that they are, Avenged Sevenfold returned to the stage and ripped it up with Pantera's "Walk," where Synyster Gates played a 3-minute-long solo.
Disturbed hit the stage and played a little slower, but played stuff off their last two albums and older stuff. They were fantastic. System Of A Down came on with their 90-minute set and played new and old stuff and closed the deal.
After the “incident” during the Avenged Sevenfold set, people were beginning to leave, just like last year’s Iron Maiden “incident.” If Ozzfest is to continue, they are going to need huge names headlining both stages, fewer “incidents,” more security for fans... and less security for media. Wait a minute, Sharon’s gonna need a “makeover,” I mean, she’s gonna have to give Ozzfest a complete makeover.
Thanks to all the really cool people we talked to at this year’s Ozz-Mess. Let’s see what happens next.
