CD Review
By The Rocker
It was 23 years ago that Ireland’s THIN LIZZY released their last studio LP, “Thunder & Lightning.”. That heavy rock masterpiece was produced by Chris Tsangarides, (Judas Priest, Y&T, Gary Moore), so it’s fitting that Chris has taken four young lads from County Wicklow Ireland today and has produced their self-titled debut CD – Glyder. I’m hoping classic rock is the new grunge, giving rock a kick in the ass, and Glyder is one of those bands. They’re also keeping the flame of Irish rocker Phil Lynott burning bright. Bass player Tony Collen also sings, and you have the twin lead guitar attack of Bat Kinane and Pete Fisher, while drummer Davy Ryan runs a tight ship, with a solid beat. Sound familiar? You’re damn right! It sounded good back then and it sounds good now. Glyder are putting the “class” back in classic rock. The CD opens with a LIZZY riff and continues with some storytelling not unlike Phil Lynott, but with a modern edge. It’s about two characters, Shady and Little Frankie, who are trying to survive out on the streets. The anthem “PUP” and “You Won’t Bring Me Down”, is LIZZY meets Norway’s STREET LEGAL, while “She’s Got It” has that Jailbreak vibe. “Saving Face” is a fast paced rocker that sounds like a SYKES tune, with Robbo playing the lead. The twin lead guitar harmonies are all over the disc, bringing to mind old school IRON MAIDEN and SAXON. The songwriting is pretty mature for guys barely in their twenties. Take “Die or Dance” for instance, a political song about war and the American dream. Well, it’s not all about being Irish and copying THIN LIZZY. It’s about guitar riffs and harmonies. The song “Stargazer”, not a RAINBOW cover, is a melodic dream with nice backing vocals, while a bass intro kicks off the most original sounding song on the disc called “One For The Lost.” This tremendous debut closes with the acoustic strumming of “Natural Coloured Life” complete with a twin lead riff and more vocal phrasing ala Phil Lynott. Incidentally, Phyllis, the mother of the LIZZY frontman said “Watching them , I got such a buzz. The same as I did watching me Phil.” Glyder have found their niche in the music world and have put their own stamp on it, now its time to send it out to the rest of the (waiting) world. A must have for any fans of classic hard rock.
